| So, I am really freaked out. Last night, I found a tick on my filly's belly! I have actually never seen a tick before...so that was a first. It was a large white/grey color, we very carefully pulled it out, and the head came with it, phew! So I know I'm probably going to sound way over the top, but I have never dealt with ticks before...is there anything I should give her now? I didn't think we even had ticks up here this time of year! I am reading some other posts about it, maybe adding some garlic to their feed? Should I be concerned about Lymes? Thank you!

Location: Eastern OH but my heart is in WV | I certainly would not be alarmed over a tick. Ticks are HORRIBLE in eastern Ohio. We have to do tick checks FREQUENTLY and have pulled hundreds. I did test one horse but thankfully he was negative. No other side effects noted on any of other 3. I sincerely wish I knew how to keep them off the horses but I don't have any good suggestions. We spray them with a good, name fly/tick spray but it only helps some. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | Here in WY our horses get covered in them. We pour permectin over them. And sometimes mix in a sprayer to get the bellies, under mane, jaw and chest. https://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=30e07945-7b6a-11d5-a192-00b0d0204ae5&sfb=1&itemguid=3269d985-7b6a-11d5-a192-00b0d0204ae5&utm_content=16499&ccd=IFF003&CAWELAID=120295250000087154&CATARGETID=120295250000171788&cadevice=c&gclid=CjwKCAiA1O3RBRBHEiwAq5fD_Ed-p9ycHiZ5oRdCu****os-yv_bawHMpHxCVyvqUQ4xpx1ZiYZJ8xoCLIAQAvD_BwE |

Location: on the fine line between insanity and geniusness | We have them HORRIBLE in east Texas this year. Luckily, we have had no sickness. Iām like a dang monkey, I go over every horse every night when I feed. They are gross little rascals |

| I remember as a kid gathering together with our horses and picking ticks. We'd put them in a big jar and then go have fun popping the big ones and burning the little ones. Huh, glad I haven't shown my hubb -- he might still want to do that! |

Location: Do I hear Banjos? | We have them bad here in the Ouachitas in Arkansas. The best results we have had in keeping them off, (especially when we ride in the woods) is to use Sawyers Clothing Spray. It's permethrin, but in a formulation that is designed to be applied to clothes and allowed to dry. Once dry it repels ticks even through a few washings. We have used it on our riding clothes and when hunting/hiking with great results.
They advertise it now for use on dogs, and the percentage of permethrin is similar to other tick treatments for horses. We tried it, spraying their coat and saddle pad etc and it works wonderfully!

| We always had bad ticks growing up in Montana, but I haven't pulled many off my horses around here in NCW. I've always noticed they tend to like lighter colored horses (because they look like deer and elk), and I was constantly pulling hundreds off my paint, with most of them in his white areas. But hey, they really don't discriminate! Blood is blood to them We never did much to treat them, since they were such a common occurrence, we just kept pulling them off and waited for a hard freeze.

Location: Southern Indiana | Ticks usually aren't out during the colder months but I did find an itty bitty one on one of my horses a few weeks ago but it has been pretty mild so far this year. All you can do is pull it off and make sure to get the head. I will usually swab the bite with some peroxide or alcohol. Then you squish it! The juicy ones are gross lol other than that you do nothing....especially since they aren't popular in your area. Sometimes they will leave a bump on the bite area. Just watch it and make sure it eventually goes down. It can take weeks sometimes. Lymes is a possibility but people and animals get thousands of tick bites and don't get it. There's really nothing you can do to prevent it. |

OP, where do you live? I'm in east-central Florida and the ticks are awful here every year, but our property borders a 2,000 acre preserve (mostly wooded), so the ticks are thick. Our property is mostly cleared, but the ticks must smell my fat horses, LOL. I have to pick ticks off of them every other night during the season.
