Location: Texas | I have just starting having trouble with my 6 your old turning the 2nd barrel and 1st barrel. When he gets on the back side he blows it and shacks his head a little. He works it just fine slowly. So, i had his teeth floated a week ago. The guy told me his teeth were not bad at all. Now when i run him at home he turns the first barrel and then blows the backside soo much i finally pull him up. I am just now starting to run him. He has not been hauled alot. I am very upset on what is going on?? He is a very nice horse. |

Usually when a horse starts SUDDENLY doing something they have not done before, it means they are in pain somewhere.
I would particularly look at hocks and stifles. Take your horse to a good lameness vet and go from there.

| Sounds like he’s anticipating the run. In my slow work, I would circle the barrel twice and overturn it a step when finishing to reinforce the turn and waiting on me. I’m a firm believer in walked 15-20 sets for every time I go fast. You can do a lot of training at a walk and not cause them to burn out. |

Location: WYOMING | Here is a really really really good drill for finishing turns and getting some snap.
The key is to move that shoulder at the exit!!!
Also watch your hands... people tend to pick up the bad habit of pulling on them at the exit especially if the horse has exited wide a time or two. Its a catch 22, you pull harder, the fight more!!
Also make sure you are not entering with too much pocket and flattening out on the backside as this gives them no room to finish and they must step out to get around.

Location: Duvall, WA | When first reading the OP it sounded like the horse was suddenly blowing out, but actually I think you mean he is just starting to run and started doing this. I have a nice mare who did the same thing when she started running, the Jordan Briggs video is great, I think she is right, the young ones just get excited and start running too soon. They aren't trying to be bad. Her exercises look good. I wouldn't put too much pressure on him for it as stress in the pattern could just make it worse. |

| I have a horse that did the same thing at home when we started to add speed. As he was leaving his second, he was facing his pen and his buddies. I switched my pattern. |
