We sold our ranch in Nebraska and want to return to Oklahoma to semi-retire and build an indoor arena slanted towards public use. We would like to offer individual riding slots throughout the day and evenings have practice nights for barrels/poles, calf, team, and breakaway roping, cutting/cowhorse, and just open riding. Maybe if someone wants to help, jackpots or junior rodeo stuff on the weekends. We intend to add an apartment and camper hookups in case someone would like to stay and work futurity horses, etc. We are also interested in hosting 4-H or FFA kids for some of their stuff.

We would like some input on a community that would like something like that to be built as well be able to keep it busy. We will build it no smaller than 130’x275’, insulated, and some climate control for comfort.

Again, our main goal is finding a welcoming community close enough to a hard surface road for ease of access, and at least 80 acres of good pasture since we still have our breeding business and will have to have some cattle around. We DO NOT want to compete with any existing arena so prefer a community that does not already have one, and would give preference to an area south of OKC and not too far one either side of I35, and would also look east of OKC a ways, but not too far from I40. We are open to actually buying an existing arena if it meets the above criteria. Must be zoned ag and need to find something ASAP due to our 1031.

We would really appreciate any input from people who would like to see something like this in their community. Thank you in advance :)

Well we thought we had an existing one found east of Shawnee that we could have improved but I’m afraid it’s not going to work out.

So sorry you don't want  to come to southeast arkansas!!  We have SO many folks here that would be over the moon for a facility like this.  Good luck in your search!

Riverbend Arena near Tulsa seems to be pretty successsful at exactly what you're describing.

I know Running R at Meeker is a really great place too, so maybe look hard at those businesses and see what they're doing.

There's nothing like that south of OKC. Wynnewood had a good indoor pen, but it costs a fortune to open ride, and it's not set up super great for barrel racing.

I'd look hard at Purcell and Norman.

Do you think something at Stratford or Wynnewood would be a good place? There is some land at both places that might work. We would like a 130 x 275 so big enough to rope and run barrels . What is a fair price/hr to ride? I go to Torrington, WY periodically and it is $45/hr with the arena worked, lights, heat, etc. We would like to do it less expensive than that, if we can stay busy.

Is that $45/hr per horse or however many horses you take? Seems a little high to me. I know the places around eastern Oklahoma I think charge $20 for first horse and $10 for the ones thereafter.  And I believe it's for like a 3 hour time span.  There are quite a few places in eastern Oklahoma.  I don't know of anything like this towards Ok City. Purcell is a big horse community so just might work there.

Stratford is kind of out of the way.

Wynnewood is at least right off the interstate.

I'd stay as close to OKC and convenient travel as you can, you might could maybe pull some of the bigger horse sales that way too.

To clarify, they charge $45/hr for exclusive use no matter how many horses or people there are. They charge a little more if you bring cattle to rope.
From what I have seen down there for ads, it is about what you quoted and $10/3 timed exhibitions. Is tha about right?

Since we need to also run some cattle and horses, we have to put up with some inconvenience to be able to purchase more land. Looking for highway frontage though. No trail roads lol.

Everyone is welcome at our place, now and in the future with some ground rules. I even have the sign for the entrance. It reads: “Leave your gun, dog, temper, politics, and complaints in the truck. Zero tolerance.” I hope we can follow those rules on here while we try to find a place that everyone can enjoy.

Around OKC there are a ton of indoor arena's and barrel racing is like a way of life out there. It is a year-round gig and there are barrel races that happen every day of the week. There are also a lot of open arena nights and practices. I guess it would be about location. I know the Running R and OK Corral have open arena nights/barrel/pole practices. There was an arena that was doing open barrel/pole practices more South but I believe they charged $10 a person/per horse but I know they recently relocated somewhere else. I would be more inclined to be more north of OKC in my opinion.

Henryetta would be great.  It is right at the intersection of I-40 and Highway 75.  Lots and lots of cowboys and cowgirls in the Henryetta area and Tammy Hiatt, former PR person for the IPRA, also has a real estate office there to help you find land.
