| So this may seem kinda stupid, but how do you keep your hat on your head when you make a run? Mine likes to fly off when I go faster than a trot. And I know I can't go smaller, cause it's a youth size. Any suggestions? |

| I have a lot of hair, and it’s very curly, so it gets big and fluffy. I wear a 7 1/4-1/2, so I would stuff Kleenex or paper towels inside the liner where it goes around my head. When my hair was wet, the paper towels worked perfect, and then when it would dry, I could just take them out. Easy fix for me. |

Location: Southeast Louisiana | When I have to wear a hat to run, I use a stampede string. Now, this can be a hot topic. There are some who’d rather pay a hat fine than be seen with a stampede string. I don’t like to lose my hat during a competition. So, I use one.
I have my work hat lined with some stick on material. I think it’s called moleskin. It does the trick, but it’s not held on solely by that material. However, I like how much more comfortable it is and it doesn’t leave me with a ridge presses in my forehead that looks like I have stitches. You might try that. |

| Flip the liner down, if that’s still not enough pop the crown out and really jam it down or buy one with a higher crown. The hats I would make runs in were cheap, didn’t care if I trashed the liner and the crown type.
I run with a helmet now though but very rarely lost a hat. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | I would just pull my hat down as far as I could befor a run and then pop it off after my run, lol it hurt a little bit but never lost my hat.  |

I run with a helmet now though but very rarely lost a hat.

Location: Riding Crackhead. | Buy a better quality hat. Go somewhere that sells good hats and a staff that knows what their doing. You shouldn't need a stampede string to keep your hat on.

Location: Ohio girl moved to PA | Get it shaped properly to fit your head. I bought an American at Congress last year and the people that shaped it didnt do it how i wanted and i couldnt wear it without a stampede strap, bobbypins and hair spray. Finally got it reshaped by someone that knew what they were doing and it fits my head perfectly now. i still put a stampede strap just incase but ive used it without and it stays on great!Â

My solution ..... I wear a helmet.
But if a hat is your thing, I agree with the others. Go with a little better quality hat and make sure it actually fits your head correctly. That makes a big difference.
When I did the rodeo queen thing, I used bobby pins to keep my hat on.

Location: Southern Indiana | Sounds like your like me and have a small head!!! Have you actually measured your head to see what size you really need? Most of the youth hats have too short of a crown and don’t sit down far enough on my head. I wear a 6 1/2 and they are hard to find but Rods has a good selection of them. The key to getting your hat to stay on is it fitting. My hat fits and I’ve never had any problems. I crunch it down to my eyebrows when I’m on deck and it stays.
Finding that hat was tough. I don’t know why hat maker don’t stock hats any smaller than a 6 3/4?!?!? A lot of adults have smaller heads than that!!! |

| I cannot stand a tight hat. I'll have a headache in no time. So, I also have trouble when it comes time to run. I do have good fitting, quality hats, both Americans. I use folded up paper towels in the liner. They also make adhesive foam strips you can attach, check Amazon. I also pull down the back liner and it hasn't failed me yet. |

Location: Smack Dab in the Middle | A well fitted hat shouldn't come off...that said, well fitted and custom fitted hats are NOT cheap. I stick an ultra thin panty liner to the front of my hat band, which helps grip my forehead (and absorbs sweat!), and I also flip the back of the hat band down and put it on back to front so that the inverted hat band cups the back of the crown of my head. I do those two things, even on my custom fitted Shorty's hat--because it's way too friggn' expensive to ever touch dirt!
ETA: another bonus of the panty liner (vs something like the moleskin)...when it gets gross you peel it off and stick on another one! Plus, I always have some in my trailer for emergencies.

Location: Texas | I wear a 6 5/8" and it about cuts my circulation off now. IDK why it does it now because it's always been tolerable. Sucker does not come off though! At the last big show I was at, the second day my forehead was in such pain from my hat, like I even had a bruise...I switched to a helmet. Socially, I felt awkward. But it was like my head was being hugged, not suffocated. I felt really good, even though I felt self conscious in it. |

| Taller crown, With straws I usually have them get it hot and then shove it down on my head until it is cool. The top doesn't pop out but they usually put two little pop out indention on each side. Good hats help too. Spend the money if you can. They last forever especially if it is a nice felt. |

| Make sure it fits, then I use hairspray on the band and glue it to my forehead, just to be extra safe. I can't stand bobby pins and stampede strings feel like they're strangling me. Basically I'm just a big baby about it!  |

I have been on the lookout for an American hat that isn't blow the bank expensive, but for now I may just get a cheaper straw that has a high crown. I have something like a 4x wool cheapo that is insanely battered and worn so it's about time to get a new one. Lol. I like to be able to try a hat on before I purchase, but I don't live close to a big city so it's hard to get somewhere that has a big a selection without traveling 3 or 4 hrs. Have any of you tried ordering a hat online? And would you recommend it? |

I would not, this is just my opinion though. When i was searching for my new one, i tried on tons of different styles and brands and noticed that some do run differently. I wasnt the same size in a stetson as i was an American. Plus i wanted to make sure i was getting one that fit exactly how i wanted it. I can be super picky though. lol |
