Location: Do I hear Banjos? | I did a search back a year trying various words but couldn't find threads on this topic.
I have a grey horse with what is supposed to be a white tail. Arena dirt and his love of rolling in whatever gets him dirtiest has left me with a more yellow/orange yuck tail. Regular shampoo and Orvis shampoo doesn't get the yellow out. What do you folks use that works?

| I used laundry grade bluing cleaner on the paint I used to have. I just dunked the mane and tail, scrubbed a bit, rinsed, and conditioned. Did a really nice job very fast. |

| I LOVE the Purple White and Brite shampoo by Farnam. I had a POA with a white tail and this made is So pretty and shiny. Plus the stains didn't stick as bad.

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | most whitening shampoos strip the hair and open it up for more stains to just get in deeper as well as making it dry and brittle. I paid $75 for a hunter under saddle mane braiding video to learn this lol. But it totally made sense why it was harder and harder to get the yellow out. EquiFUSE has the perfect shampoos/conditioners and leave in to get them clean to the base and protect against sun damage. My pali stud has a mane and tail that feels like human hair and he always has nasty poop in it. I can get it clean with one washing. |

I did have to use Mane N tail Conditioner in the winter time to keep it long and soft on mine. Mine had a typical Appy tail as a youngster, and I worked hard to get it beautiful! |

I showed against a girl in 4H that had an appy that looked exactly like yours. You could only see the spots if she was wet. That horse won EVERYTHING in the show ring. I think she had a short mane but did have a lovely tail for an Appy. I also grew up on apps. My dad was a fan, me not so much. But the one sure taught me how to ride and even though we had a personality conflict, I have to credit her for being one if not the, most athletic horses I ever rode-EVER. She could do it all.

Funny part was she didn't start out that color! I loved her more when she aged! |

Not sure what it is that's in it but it works, I use it if I'm out of blue shampoo. A lady once told me about it when I asked her how she kept her horses tail so pretty and white. But it takes a whole bottle to saturate and soak a thick tail.... |

| Quic Silver is my favoite shampoo. I don't feel like it is as stripping as some of the others. One thing you have to do after is condition condition CONDITION!! I like to prevent my white tails from getting nasty in the first place if I can. I keep their tails up saddle seat style. (Sorta like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTiyEh0LwMw) |

| The Mane and Tail purple spray whitener is a favorite, but I have an old school way too. Soap tail up with Palmolive dishwashing soap. Mix water (75%) and Clorox bleach (25%) and pour onto soaped up tail. Rinse after 5 minutes. Make sure you have a powerful spray attachment on your hose so you can rinse the tail completely. Using a conditioner afterwards of course will prevent dryness and damage.
These tricks have done wonders for my palomino |
