When looking at purchasing a weanling or prospect of any age do you prefer to buy a colt or filly? Why?
Edited to add: if they are both bred equally well. :)

This is an excellent point, but I just don't care to ride fillies. So if I am wanting to ride myself, I get a colt. |

| I like fillies. Had 2 geldings prior...one would give me the world, the other one is an ass. Had 2 mares before these two, and both would give the world.
I just like the girly attitudes that come with mares. So that's why I bought a filly. I probably should have bought a gelding....since it's a bit messy when she's in heat. You can't tell it with her, but the boys are stupid. |

Same here. Personal choice and seem to be more willing with less attitude, in my experiences. |

This has been my reasoning for wanting a filly. I've always had geldings and loved them, but it's a nice insurance policy to know that a filly has a back-up career if she gets injured. |

Oh I agree 100%! Just saying if sheβs well bred and not able to compete due to injury (not something she would pass on to offspring like navicular or something) then it would be nice to have the option. |

| I have a preference for geldings myself as well, but darn it couple years ago bought a mare, just had to have her and she is well worth it. LOLOL I will not breed a mare of mine unless it would be significantly cheaper to raise my own than buy. Right now I can find nice, well bred, good confirmation prospects for under 5k. EASILY..... Usually under 4k, but 5 is my max. By the time I pay stud fee, vet bills, raise the foal to age 2/3 to when they can be ridden, then trained, etc I am in WAY OVER 5k. And my vet even says the hardest part about foals is keeping them alive for 3 years.. lol And these prospects that I speak of for 5k, are BROKE, and usually ready to go right on the pattern. |

Same. Bought one mare, and I'm ready for her to go. |

| Filly for sure. The mares I've been fortunate enough to ride, campaign and own have all had tremendous heart and have never given up. I love the grit and personality of mares, and yes, if they have a performance career ending injury, you can breed them. If she's not a mare I wanted to breed before she got hurt, then I wouldn't breed her after the fact. I do understand terrible things happen and they can die, but that can happen to any horse.
