I have been running a 14.2 (and 3 quarters lol) mare who is not only short but she is short back and short neck as well. She does have a stride for a smaller horse, she’s smooth and is a free runner, I haven’t had her quite a year yet but I’m not sure she will ever be fast enough to get to the top....however she tries her heart out and is super super honest and easy, so many great things about this mare, she even lets my autistic step daughter walk her around and is gentle with her...and that’s why I don’t want to sell her, but then again my dream is to get faster.... I’m hoping with age (she’s coming 8 in spring) and more training (still have room to improve turns) that we will at least get to top of 3D in big shows - we are clocking 4D bottom of 3 now. Another issue is I’m a heavier rider I could afford to loose 20-30 lbs which would help, and I’m working on that but I’m still thinking I may need a bigger horse eventually!

Anyone have any small horses that can outrun the best? This mare was day worked on by a man much bigger then me for a few years but then again he wasn’t asking her to run!

Any advice? (Opening that can of worms) lol

Here’s some pics for size reference, the only thing I have going is that I’m short

I have a 14 hand gelding who won over $1,300 at tough amatuer rodeos in 5 weeks last summer. He's not always a 1D horse at jackpots simply because he gets bogged down in deep ground, but give us some shallow trashy ground and I like his chances against just about any horse out there. I think I ran him Aug. 4, Aug. 11, Aug. 19, Aug. 25-27 (ran the fastest time of the whole finals but drug 2nd barrel over to cost us the year end title), Sept. 1, and Sept. 15. He placed on every run except the 19th (gawked at a big screen TV behind the second barrel and was still only .2 from placing) and the 25th-27th.
Here's his winning run at a Labor Day rodeo last summer....ironically this is the deepest ground he placed on all year.

I am excited to see what he can accomplish with more opportunities this summer. We just got him vet checked yesterday and fixed the only tiny soreness he showed.

a whole $1300?

I had a 12 hand sure fire 1d, out ran most of the toughs all over the country. Turned down $200k for this horse.

My sister had a really tough little mare back in college that was a pretty tough little mare. She ran 1D with the pro girls. She stood 14.2 with shoes on. That mare was so dang quick. This mare was not all that long strided.
Should have added my sister was little bitty back then - maybe 100 lbs. soaking wet.

He looks super nice and fun!!! That’s awesome

And 12 hands!!! Holy cow!!!!

I hate to show my videos bc I know so much can be improved upon even though i pattern horses I still take lessons with a professional because you can never stop improving, this was back in November I believe, I’m teying to square her up more now and get that push and snap in turns.

Thanks for the snide comment. It's not like I ran him at very many rodeos to win that much, plus every one of the rodeos he ran at had $200 or $300 added. Our first place check was less than $500. He placed at 4 out of 8 runs against some of the Midwest's toughest horses. The URA & IRA rodeos with more added money seem to have better ground so I ran different horses. This little monster more than paid for himself in that 6 week span despite being the smallest horse at every rodeo. Some of the Missouri girls who run on hard crappy ground all the time have a serious crush on him. LOL.

I knew POA ponies that would win barrel races and that was back before divisions.  They had to be under 56" (14.1 hands or so).    Them little suckers could peel paint, which I felt was more of the clock beater, but they weren't slouches when it came to run either.

My main barrel horse is 14.3 pretty solid 1D and has won some big rodeos. He has a nice stride and doesn't waste an inch around a barrel.

14.1, technically a pony. Top 5 at BBR World Finals, Summer Shootout, WPRA finals, won and placed at countless 500+ entry races, went to the NFR as a backup horse twice.

This is the Blues Girl Too the highest earning female AQHA. Shes like 14 hands with shoes on and her hooves grown out. Jordan bassett's bro trainer her and she broke Dash for Cash's record at 440 yards.

It doesn't matter how tall a horse is, it is the length of their stride and size of their "want to" that matters.

Fallon Taylor's mare Baby Flo is a barrel horse thats very small like 14 h, and Fallon is a bigger girl compared to most riders. Taylor Jacob's Bo is very short as well.

Lots of small horses are successful. Watch the American Slack today and you'll see all kinds of kinds from 14h to near 17h along with name brand breeding to stuff that is less heard of.

My mare is 14.2 on her tippy toes! Last year we ran against 7 of the horses who went to the NFR she outran some and clocked right there with the others and was just getting started running. She has been 16.6 to 17.1 on a standard set. I have high hopes for her future just hope I can keep riding as fast as she runs. Give your horse some time to find her wheels and do all you can to get yourself ready. It took me some time to let my mare do her thing but she found her way. Don't laugh to hard at me flying out of my saddle !

Our go-to is to look at our runs over and over and over and tweak ourselves to be the best we can be for example, practicing timing and consistency with hands, body etc. we sit in a chair and practice running in our mind and go they the motions even putting some reins on a chair in front of us. My goal is to be quicker handed but very smooth and consistent. We also feed the best feed and hay we can find. We do exercise like hills , short sprints etc. to improve quickness and strength. We use lightest tack possible, and I understand the weight deal, I have two I’m not riding because I gained a lot this year. One is 13 something hands and I feel him struggle some but I’m trying to get myself more fit as well.
I think your horse is a great size though and I would hang on to that one, PRICELESS in my book. One of the horses I ride is 3D at big shows, consistent as heck and hits the top of that D dang near everytime. He’s the bank. He pays the way for the others. It’s nice pulling that check! My hat is off to you for trying so hard to be your very best. I’m certain you will do great things because you try so hard and you make no excuses. In my book that is a sure sign of greatness! I hope you decide to keep this horse.

Size is relative. Look at the NFR.  A 1/2 pony won big all the way to the horses that are 16 hands plus.  These same horses are running inside and out, big and small patterns and winning. I could care less about size, a winner is a winner.

My mare is a 13.3 hand cutter reject who goes back to dash for cash so far back he’s not even on her papers and she placed at half of the pro rodeos I entered her in last year in which all but one I was pregnant too.  And all of the patterns were big high 16-17 second patterns.

Thank you very much, you have no idea how hard I work, I’ve been in bed with a nasty cold today and I need to find some motivation to ride this evening! I had to buy a new truck so getting another horse is out of the question for a while and I want to work on this one and prove everyone wrong who says she’s to small for me!

Yep!!!

I run a 14.1 hander and I’m 5’9 and 155-160. My height gets me more on him than my weight, physics sucks and if I’m not riding balanced I can pull him into a barrel, or he can almost lose me in a turn (although the one time the tractor driver thought he was going to have to pick me up at the 2nd we clocked in the 1d against some pretty nice horses). He’s just coming into his own and I’m just learning to trust and send him - beyond excited for this year.

size really doesn't matter - stride length does. If you want small horse inspiration - read up on Hotshot......I know of many small sized big time winning horses. Obviously, you couldn't pair someone exceptionally large with a really small rascal - but an average sized rider should be fine.
