Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | A lot of people do this, you see all track fillys done. If this is not done a lot "not all" of mares and fillys will suck air when ran, not a healthy thing for them to be doing. |

Can you explain what you mean by "sucking air" ? This is all new to me sorry! |

When air enters the vigina it can bring in dirt, bacteria and other problems.. This contamination can lead to infections..

| Anytime there is a high rate of speed where the mare splits the hind legs (like flat track racing or barrel racing) you should get a caslick’s. It’s just a bad idea not to. It won’t necessarily stop marish behavior, but it does keep the reproductive system healthy and clean. |

| All the mares we ride get done. Period. It is a cheap procedure and can alleviate a lot of problems in future. |

I seriously cannot believe that there are people that don't have their mares sutured. It is a simple and cost effective way to avoid possible performance issues as well as guarding their reproductive health. |

Location: Florida | We had a perchon mare done on the advise of our vet. All was fine until she got kicked right under the tail. Ripped the stitches and made a huge mess, blood every where. That is the only mare we have done. It is an unnecessary operation on most mares. Some need it for medical reasons but as a preventative or a potential performance inhancer I would never do it. |

| I just never heard of it before, I've owned 4 mares and the rest geldings so far in my lifetime. I'm having issues with one of my mares being witchy and acting in heat I swear all the time. I have a vet coming out next week to do an ultrasound as well. Do they swab or do anything back there to test for infection before the caslicks prodecure? Like I said this is all new to me |

It sounds like the kick was a freak accident and not the norm.
I can give you a huge list of vets that will tell you that you are totally wrong and give you real reasons why. To each their own I guess. But I feel your advise is WAY off the mark and just flat out wrong. Especially when it comes to barrel horses. Sorry. |

I’ve had all mine done as 2 year olds. We never cultured them. If your mare is always in heat, check like was already advised about numerous follicles. Then talk with your vet about Regumate. But I’d do as caslicks regardless. |

Sucking air is painful to mares. And let's not forget even if it's not barrel or racing mares, certain vulval conformation contributes to a higher rate of potential infection. |

| I have an appt this week to check ovaries as well...she's not cranky under saddle, so I'm guessing it's not painful ovaries or I hope not. Question, do you have to get a culture/swab before caslicks is done? Or could I have my vet do the surgery and find out results later if infection? |

Location: MI | I have a mare who has a great personality and no history of bucking but in last couple years, she randomly would buck when running - once even during an actual run which was SO bizarre for her. She wasn't sore anywhere else so we had her sewed up, figuring that she was sucking air.
Vet also said as they age, their reproductive organs can start to settle/shift back there, thus why she just now was starting to suck air (she was 15 when it happened). |

You can culture her, have the vet do the caslicks and if she's infected, she can be treated with the caslicks intact. You can even breed a mare with a caslicks (A-I of course). They just need to be opened up before foaling so they don't tear.
