I posted on FB yesterday about rubber bands & the pros & cons of them. I had a lady put this in my comments. I know lots of ppl who use rubber bands, magic seats or whatever else they see fit to help them. I was s little irritated with it.

“If you are not strong enough to stick in the Saddle, when you lose your stirrups, then you don’t need to be running Barrels. JS.

I can understand one rubber band to just hold them all together. But when rubber bands are used as a crutch, that’s when it becomes dangerous”

I have seen someone get drug with one little rubber band holding their foot in the stirrup. I have also seen a kid on a runaway horse unable to do anything bc she couldn't pull her feet out of the stirrups to even think about bailing off. Her headstall broke and he was running wide open through the parking lot. If your foot is in the stirrup and can't move out, there isn't any pressure put on the band to cause it to break.
That said, while I hate to see anyone get hurt, that's their business, not mine.

Magic seats...make me nervous for a different reason. I support them being used in many situations, but they are not meant to be used to hold a kid on a horse that otherwise would be unable to ride alone. Kids that can ride on a strong horse? Go ahead. Adults? Wear it proud. Babies that would fall off without it? NOPE.

ETA: That said, I rode with bands for many years. I won't anymore. Just this past weekend my mom was making a run and her saddle rolled. She made it to the alley on the right side of the horse, barely. But if she had been banded in, it could've been a disaster instead of hurt pride.

My personal opinion in anything & everything is that I need to mind my own business. I’ll do what works for me, and try things that I think will be good for me. Trial and error until I feel like an expert (never happening!!!).

Here is a direct quote from Jordon Briggs. "I usually always use rubber bands on my feet to make sure I don't lose a stirrup. My mom always said there's just too much money up to take the chance, because when you lose your stirrup, it hurts you."

I would say she knows a thing or two about winning. This was written in an article in The Team Roping Journal.

I use to use them. I feel quite a bit more secure in my new saddle so for now I’m forgoing them. My little horse can be quite a pill when I’m trying to put them on, he knows they mean go time, so it’s also easier on that front as well.

Whether or not an adult uses them, that’s their opinion. We haven’t let my 11 yr old niece use them yet, even though she’s lost a stirrup here and there (she probably handles it better than I would, young and fearless). If we do decide she needs them they will be the thinnest ones we can find.

^^this.  I guess all the pros who are wearing rubber bands don’t know how to ride.   There are occasions where a stumble or having to lift your leg to miss a barrel where rubber bands come in handy.   I  wish our sport would just not be so judgmental about what others do, especially when it does not effect them. So what if someone needs rubber bands to keep their stirrups?? Who cares??  Let’s encourage, not discourage.

I don’t like rubber bands because I feel they push my foot too deep into the stirrup. I feel more comfortable riding on the ball of my foot.

I am amazed at the time people waste time on.  Put your focus, time and effort into your own business, horses and runs and let everyone else do what works for them.  Exactly what qualifies a bunch of bench jockeys to make judgements about anothers needs and circumstances??

SouthTxPonyGirl, apparently it got deleted. It showed a video of a girl that had a good run going until her horse slipped on the 3rd barrel & when he came back up with her still on him (she appeared to be a good rider) he stood there then went backwards & finally just sat on his butt. She tried to get her feet out but were banded in so 2 guys came over to help her get her feet out. The horse just sat there & got up when she got off of him.

The way the lady replied on my post was if you are using rubber bands you don't need to be barrel racing. I know a lot of girls (& guys) that are world champions & they use rubber bands.

I used to use rubber bands until I got a horse that occasionally has sketchy meltdowns during warm up - usually if I’m on her for too long and she gets overly nervous. She will run sideways and try to kick whatever is closest to her. I don’t put up with that crap but the harder I get after her the faster she runs sideways and I’m not going to risk getting someone else or their horse hurt, so I step off her if I even feel her starting to get to that point (although I’ve gotten pretty good at keeping it from happening to begin with). I decided I would rather risk losing a stirrup than not being able to kick my feet immediately out when she suddenly loses her mind and I need to get off to keep her slamming into someone.

That being said I don’t care if people rubber band their feet in or not and I don’t think it makes a difference. Rubber bands don’t magically make you a good rider. Im pretty sure most of us who ride regularly can handle a lost stirrup during a run but it doesn’t mean most people WANT to.

I accidently raised an event horse. I sent him to an eventing trainer to help get him sold. She added me to her training FB group that is just for her students and owners. The amount of work those girls do would put most of us barrel racers to shame. It did not surprise me one bit to see how secure she was in the saddle.  When she posts the work out schedule for the middle of winter I just giggle and thank god I didn't pick eventing as my riding of choice. Down to no stirrups November. Yikes can they ride!

Always used them; don't run barrels anymore but my daughter does. The way we put them on, you can just pull your foot backwards and get them off.

Loop two rubberbands together. Put one over the toe of your boot. Then put your foot in the stirrup, and pull the bottom band over the bottom of your stirrup and back over the toe of the boot.

Agreed. I did it for a time in my teeens, just because it seemed like everyone was doing it, and it just bothered the heck out of me because I like weight at the ball of my foot instead of my arch.
That being said, I don't care if people band or not. I actually have two rubber bands on my horn in case someone needs one real quick. I also like it because it gives a little more grip to my horn. Plus they're blue so they match my horse's boots lol.

I run with a thin rubber band over each foot. I've had them break just from me kicking so I know it wont hold my entire body weight if I came off. On the other hand I wish there was a way for velcro seats to be banned. A young girl in my area died using one. The horse flipped over on her and she didn't come undone. She couldn't bale. I used one once because I had a huge 16.2 gelding that would power hard out of turns and I couldn't even get myself un-velcroed if I wanted to in a bad situation and I'm 140lb vs these 40lb children.

We ride horses..... the bat sh*t crazy ones who like to leave their brain at the gate. If we can get through the pattern in one piece, I would say barrel racers can ride. Rubber bands are a tool. Not everyone needs to use it but others do, it doesnt make someone less of a rider because of it. Ive had rubber bands save me several times. 90% of the time when I'm walking back out of the arena after a run, I have one if not both snap off. Ive learned a different way to put them on and it works for me.
