There is a 2yo (well she officially turns 2 at the end of June) that I have been eyeballing but it said she popped a splint in December (she was lightly started in the fall). They said she is fine now. As far as I know I’ve never had a horse that has done this, so is it something to worry about? Does it cause problems in the future or if I bought her and just let her be a horse for a year would she be okay?

It's common in horses her age. She needs rest and time to grow. Here is a good article...

Agree with above =] Just give her time to heal. My big gelding has a splint on each front! Very common in racehorses or horses started very young. If given the proper time to heal though, they shouldn't ever be an issue <3

I've had two pop their splint bone. They were younger and a litter finer boned. Both recovered fine. Time off is the RX I gave mine. Both are sound but one still has a bump where it happened. Vet said that won't go away.

Thank you, it was my understanding that they usually aren’t a big deal. They have radiographs that I’m waiting to see. I would love to buy her, her mom is a full sister to my favorite horse and I’ve been searching high and low for a horse bred similar to him. She’s being sold through a college so I have to wait for their sale, but fingers crossed I can get her!

Rarely a problem and nothing more than a blemish. Only time it can be an issue is if the splint is very close to a joint space. My 4 year old had one when he was 2 as well. Right in the middle of a LF leg.

They are usually just a blemish, but they don’t go away and that’s usually a problem or concern for resale with buyers because they make a big deal about that

Look at the X-rays, everytime my horses have "popped a splint" it has been fracutred. Some needed no intervention, some needed surgery. It all depends on the severity, if it was inside or outside high or low.

If it heals well there won't be an issue, if the horse had swelling in the knee or ankle during the healing period, these ones are more susceptible to arthritis in the joint later on.

Indeed What Cheryl said. At the least get an x Ray to see if what your dealing with. My horse has popped splints 3 times. 2 of the 3 were indeed Fractures. With One of the fractures, my gelding wasn't really lame, even sent videos my friends and they said he didn't look lame. But he was sensitive to palpation and had a hot, hard lump developing. Didn't think it was fractured but got an x Ray since the vet was already coming to x Ray another horse. Luckily I did because he defiantly broke himself. Lol

Oh is it the smutty buckskin Sunfrost filly?! I saw her the other day, she's cute! I'm so not in the market for another horse, (since I'm pregnant lol) but I can't help but look. They have a broodmare for sale as well that's by Mr. Jess Perry with a A Streak Of Fling filly by her side, bred back to Slick by Design that I'd give my right arm for! Ugh, the good ones are always for sale when I'm not in a position to buy.

Yes!!! I’ve been checking their page every day waiting for pictures and when they finally posted her I was like dang it why does she have to be pretty!

My youngest horse is 18 so I figured I should start looking for something slightly younger haha

I saw the mare you’re talking about too, it’s nice that they actually breed their mares to top stallions!
