I was at my sister's yesterday and one of her mini mares is wandering in aimless circles. She was treated last November for EPM and hasn't shown any improvement. When I lead her, she'll follow great, but will lean on the lead rope like she can't control where her body wants to go. She's also a little wobbly and unsteady. When I can get her to finally stop walking, she'll stand for a minute and then it's like her brain says "ok, move". It's not behavioral, it's like she really can't control it. Also it's almost like the lights are on, but nobody's home.
Has anyone dealt with this before? I just need to know if there is a treatment that will give her a better quality of life because she can't keep going like this. |

She's only been seen by the vet once, and he said it was probably EPM, so that's what he treated her for. He told my sister that after her treatment, that would be about as good as she'll get. I honestly don't know if they did any blood work, or if this was just his diagnosis after visually examining her.
She'll eat, but seems to get distracted easily, so will eat a little and then walk off and then come back. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | Have you guys tryed a small dose of banamine on her? If she has any inflammation it should help with it, it wont hurt to try it, I would just squirt a little in her mouth and see what happens. |

I would try the banamine like a half of a cc since this is a mini are even 1 cc.. I would ask your vet first. I have a mini and when he founder on mesquite beans I gave him a bit of banimane to give him some relief untill I got the problem under control. |

| Maybe a little bute, incase there is any inflammation that is causing pressure on a nerve. |

| Banamine is for muscles. It wonβt help a neuro issue. Bute never helped Sidekick either. The only thing that helped briefly was a DMSO jug to relieve the swelling in the spinal cord. |

Just an FYI in case he ever founders again, Ace works better than anything for founder because of the way it dilates the capillaries. Give Ace and stand them in mud to keep the coffin from rotating because it takes the pressure off the feet. This only works when itβs just starting and they first develop a digital pulse. If they over eat and a digital pulse starts...founder is the next step. |

You said you were dealing with founder. Founder is not the same beast as a neuro problem. |

Yep, I know all the tricks for a founded mini or horse.Thank you. Bute and Banamine are both Anti-inflammatory they both reduce swelling and fever.. So I think if theres any swelling on the brain causing the neuro problems in this little mini the bute are banimane would reduce any swelling pressure on the brain.. My gelding that had head trauma a few years back banamine saved his life by reducing the swelling on his brain..Believe it or not.. So I keep Banamine out here at all times.. |

| To the OP, you can try giving vitamin E. It really helps with neuro issues. |

I was just curious how long it took before you noticed a difference with Vitamin E? |

In my experience, my horse was too far gone (thanks to numerous misdiagnoses on the part of numerous vets). In my own research and in talking with others, vitamin E has been recommended time and time again for neuro symptoms. I do know that when I was treating Sidekick for EPM (which everyone swore he had), we put him on a sulfa based EPM shake. Whenever you give any type of sulfa, you need to give E because sulfa depletes the E in the body. Sidekick was a different animal and put on all the weight heβd lost within 2 weeks. In hindsight, it was probably the high levels of E and not the EPM shake that was helping him. |

| Rebalance for EPM. Get a immune booster such as the one Silver Lining has. Get som Papaya from the grocery store. Cut it and give her a piece before feeding. It helps with ulcer pain. Most EPM horses have ulcers. Which is one way the Protozoa crosses the blood membrane barrier. |
