I recently started to leg my gelding back up and have put maybe 5 rides on in the last 2 weeks. Yesterday I noticed parts of his hock were swollen. He isnt lame, it isnt sore to the touch. He is 12 this year. Any thoughts besides trying to inject him? I tried to draw out the swelling but it stayed the same. I have included a couple pictures. Β

I can't seem to resize the pictures small enough. Basically it is a golf ball size soft lump on the outside of his hock and I can feel puffiness on the inside. I included one picture in my photo album.

I cant see your picture very well with the mud on your horse, but does it look like this? If so look up Bog Spavin..

That is what I am thinking it is too after doing some research. There is definately a pronounced ball size swelling on the outside of the hock. Looks like a trip to the vet is in order.

Could he have banged it on something? If so, maybe a "capped hock". Either way, I'd go to the vet to get it evaluated.

I had a younger horse have a similar soft lump on a hock a few years ago. It did not consistenlty respond to water or other  methods to take down swelling. ( his was on the inside) no lameness.  After xrays- it ended up being a bone chip that I had to have removed.

Have you iced his hocks? Get a good poultice and poultice his hocks. I would ice his hocks and see if it doesn’t go away

We have an appt on the 15th. Do you think it would bother it to keep walking and trotting a bit? He has been laid off 7 months or so due to my schedule. Β

I think it would be ok, as long as your not doing any sliding stops, roll backs, lol..Just slow things untill your vet can tell you whats going on. Does he stay in a stall or is he pastured?
