2 yo filly been raced twice...she's too far for me to bring to my personal vet, so what would you do? Inquire about a local track vet n do standard X-rays? I have been given personal assurance that the trainer is a stand up guy, he says she is sound, so I'm not real concerned that she actually has issues...just need a vet to look her over. Horse is at Remington Park In OK...thanks for tips/advice :)

Assurances mean NOTHING. Think about the age at which a horse is started under saddle to be able to RACE as a 2 year old!!! Think about what the horses body goes through as it is racing as a 2 year old! At minimum you need to X-ray from top to bottom all 4 legs, neck back , etc. we are talking a 1500-2000 dollar vet check. That’s cheaper than a small injury now that turns ugly later. Track vets work on the track and may not have your best interests in mind. I have had my share of colts off the track. Never ever again.

Mental Health!!  I want to have personal knowledge of the trainer and his methods.  I like to see the horses demeanor in the track enviornment.  If possible how they handle the saddling paddock and gates.

1- Regardless of what anyone says, don't take anyone else word to the bank. Been there, done that, the better you know them the worse it can be. So, take everything with a grain of salt.

Anything OTT I would scope airways and look for laryngeal hemiplegia before you buy.

Also depending on how much money you are spending on the horse, basic x rays I would take are hocks, stifles, front feet. Add in the racing history and I would be tempted to also radiograph fetlocks and knees. But thats expensive as hell what I just suggested, so you may end up prioritizing.

On a 2 yr old thats been only raced twice at this point in the year, which is really early, I'd spend my 2500-4k on the horse. I wouldn't give more for somtihng unless it was a Tres Seis or a First Moonflash. I'd watch it go and if I liked how it moved I'd buy the sucker.

Your gonna spend more vet checking it than the thing is worth.. Use your common sense and gut. You can get screwed over just as much buying a barrel prospect sometimes even more especially at a sale.

Now if the horse had more outs or it was like say July I'd advise you to be more cautious but that's probably one that just ain't working out the owners at this point.

Vets checks to me are about risk.  What are you willing to lose?  What are you willing to fix or maintain?  I bought a 3yo off the track with 13 starts, just did flex tests.  He's still barrel racing at age 12.

If you do find chips - would you pass on the horse or do surgery?  You could spend $$$ amount on the pre-purchase and pass - or just buy on the chance that you may find chips, then spend roughly the same on the surgery.  And if you pass on the horse, you are back to square 1 and going to be in another pre-check bill on the next horse.

how much are you spending and to xray ray almost entire horse what would that cost. i agree maybe flex and do standard lameness. if the horse does not workout what would you get for a trail horse. i never vetted any had a coupe i lost on but many more i made money on. just make sure temperment is good in case horse does nor work out for a barrel horse.

I bought the filly! Loved meeting the trainer, and the vet. Quality, class act folks I dealt with. I felt extremely at peace! Bought of beautiful b&w paint filly by CRM Livewire out of a Judy’s Lineage mare. She also has Shawne Bug on papers... she’s very sweet. Thank you to all who commented!
