| Is there a reason you want too?
Typically, your average tail extension is weighted...1/2# or full pound; so that it lays down nicely but that's for the halter/western pleasure folk, which is my experience with them. I always braided mine in to the back of the tail bone area then secured with a small piece of electrical tape.
I would think for your purpose, you'd want to find one that's not weighted and you'll have to make sure it's secured well. |

Gotcha. That's a bummer. You definitely don't want weighted but you also have to make sure there is enough there to attach it too.
I'd so hate for you to lose a tail on a run! |

And IMO you don’t want to. I watched a reiner rip theirs out once while backing when it was put in too low, really screwed up the horse’s back as the tailbone is an extension of the spine. A horse will keep his own tail out of the way, but the extension won’t always be picked up high enough to stay out from under his feet if he really gets down and works. Probably a lesser chance of that happening in barrels than in an event like reining, but having seen the consequences I wouldn’t risk it, not for something purely cosmetic.
If you need something for him to wear for fly control they make tail bags with swatters.

Location: North Dakota | I would absolutely not run barrels with a fake tail.
I do use a fake tail when I show and do showmanship, reining, and other showing events. And Red's is not very large, only 3/4 pound with no added weights.
Fake tails definately don't function or move like a real tail. For how low barrel horses get in the turn, it is not worth the risk for them stepping on the fake tail.
The time clock doesn't care if your horse has a chewed off tail! (Heck, might make him run faster......)

Skip the tail extension and put him on Simply Hemp (search on FB). That'll grow his tail in no time flat. |

Location: Feeding mosquitos, FL | I bought a TailBoot for a TB mare with no tail who couldn't deal with the flies or the fly boots touching her. It works pretty well. I have to put it back on about every two weeks but it really helped her keep both of our sanities. |

| I use a Tail Boot, and over the winter his tail has grown at least 3-4 inches! It's dragging on the ground, and I have to cut it here soon. I put coconut oil in, and braid it up, put it in he tail boot and leave it alone. |
