| My mare got spooked and ran into a fence on Monday she has several facial fractures and spent 48 hours at Elgin. She was on an IV the entire time she was there then I brought her back Wednesday evening and she has not touched water since then. I’ve been fighting with her fever which spiked at 103.2 Thursday evening. After giving her alcohol baths and icing her legs all the time and giving her Bute every 12 hours I’ve finally got her temperature to maintain between 100-101 but she still won’t touch water. I’ve tried electrolytes, Gatorade, pedialyte and Zesterra but nothing is encouraging her to drink. I have been feeding her a mash with a bunch of water and electrolytes in it so I’m able to get some fluid in her that way but still not much because she doesn’t want to eat much at all. Even though I make it into like a paste I assume it still hurts to eat. I’m probably only getting 2 gallons of water a day into her that way. I talked with my vet and she said just feed the mash and electrolytes and watch her very closely. But I’m still really worried. Any suggestions???? |

| I would be worried, too. I would talk another vet about your concerns. |

It will make it softer easier to chew. Hope she feels better soon! |

They have automatic waterers so you can’t really tell how much Che was drinking there but she was also on constant IV fluids there. She has a 6 gallon bucket that she’s always had for water in her stall it has a really wide top so it shouldn’t be a problem with hitting her face on it. She also has buckets with water hung up in her stall |

That’s what I have been doing but I’m still worried she’s just not getting enough. Thank you! I hope she does too!!

Location: Opelousas, LA | I have one horse that will not drink when he gets ulcery, hauling him once without something for his tummy is all it takes. If I dose him with 60ccs of the cheap maximum strength antacid from Walmart 2-3 times a day, he will get back to drinking. I had another filly that couldn't tolerate bute or she would quit drinking and get impacted, she was OK with 5ccs of banamine IV 1-2 times a day. I have never used the Zesterra although I have heard good things about it, maybe it's not enough right now? The Walmart stuff is not good to use long term because it has aluminum in it but it is cheap, easy to get right away, and it works, it's on a mint colored bottle and is about $2.50 for 12 oz. |

She has been on gastroguard since the incident to prevent ulcers because she is prone to them. Do you think this will still help? Or is the gastroguard Doug pretty much the same thing? |

Location: Opelousas, LA | It should, but I have had a few horses that didn't do well on the Gastroguard, it was like it upset thier stomach. One we gave Sucralfate for about a week and another just did better on Succeed. It wouldn't hurt to try the antacid, you just need to time the dosing so it doesn't interfere with the absorption of other meds. You will know pretty quick if it helps or not, usually by the second or third dose. |

Location: Opelousas, LA | You're welcome, hope you get her drinking soon! I have also had a couple horses that would drink better from the pasture trough then they would a bucket, especially if they are used to being out. The vets can put water in them if they need to, we have to get creative once they come home. |

Yep when she was on the IV's that helped her out alot from becoming dehydrated, I would be concern too about the water intake, I was concern that with her trying to drink low that it might be hurting her to lower her head to drink but since you got buckets hanging that should not be a problem with lowing her head. Just keep all her water fresh fresh fresh and keep the water levels as full as possible so you can see how much she's drinking when she does drink. Gosh poor baby, please keep us updated on how shes doing...Does she like playing with the water hose when she gets baths? My gelding likes to play with the hose and drink out of them, maybe wet her mouth with a water hose a few times and see if that will help her keep her mouth moist..Hugs cause I know your stressing out over this.. |

No she hasn’t but she did start eating more of the mash I’m feeding her so I guess that’s a good sign. She still looks really sucked up and has probably lost at least 50 pounds since the incident

This is actually my other mare. She’s been off and on for 3 years due to hock issues we had a hard time figuring out. She had a vet appointment schedule for Wednesday where she was hopefully going to get cleared to start running again I had her all legged up and ready to go then this happened Monday night. I swear I have the worst luck ever

| I have no advice on the water. But you need to keep a close eye on her from now on because this type of injury is exactly what Sidekick did that end d up developing into wobblers. It took 7 years from the injury happened until we had to destroy him. You can manage it with injections if you catch it in time and maintain it. |
