| My filly could use a few prayers. She wasn't feeling too good and had bad water poo so she had to go to the hospital last night. She had a few good things going for her but a couple worrisome things too. I didn't get a call during the night so that is hopeful.
5/23 Update - from my FB:
I went to visit the baby and Xena tonight. They are adding everything they can to coat and settle the baby's tummy. The list is long and I don't remember everything, but she's getting biosponge, sucralfate, another buffer, lactaid, her electrolytes, and probiotics. Her electrolytes are back to normal, low normal, but steadily climbing. She is not energetic at all, but wants to nurse something terrible. They have a tiny muzzle on her so she doesn't eat her bedding. She was obviously happy to see me and I took the muzzle off for a few minutes so she could give me kisses and lick me. Xena is being awesome - they said they wished all the mares who came with foals were as good as her! They will be increasing the foals milk intake starting tonight and we will see from there. Most of the cultures went to UC Davis in CA for whatever reason and won't be back until tomorrow. The ones that have come back are all negative so far. I'm cautiously optimistic, as is her vet. I doubt she'll be able to be home before the weekend, but maybe Sunday. She has to successfully nurse without discomfort for at least 12 hours before coming home.

| Is there anyone else about who has had a foal go through something like this?
Start at 7:00 pm: Dehydrated, watery poo, low electrolytes, low white count.
9:00 am: Electrolytes slowly readjusting. Barely dehydrated now. Concerned that there is still watery poo but restricting nursing. Low sodium still, white count improving slowly along with sodium.
Can she make anything but water poo with nothing but saline and electrolytes? |

I will ask specifically what they are doing to add any bulk to her system during this afternoon's update.
An example of hospitals (whether animal or human) not thinking things through:
One of my hubbs close friends just got out of the hospital for kidney stone removal. After surgery his blood pressure was spiking into the super dangerous zone. What did they find? Too much fluids! Lowered his rate and all was well. They may know the science well, but aren't always 'on' with the practical. |

How is that comparison the same?

Doctors of any kind are not always focused on the whole issue. If human doctors can overlook that too much fluids can hurt someone then thinking that these doctors are overlooking the filly needs some bulk to make poo is not a far stretch. I have history with this place overlooking the obvious to make a bigger bill. |

| Chandler's Mom - 2018-05-22 8:48 PM How's your baby tonight
Guarded. Her levels are rising, but slowly, no bounce back. Had a little colicy episode late this morning when they let her nurse for a minute so now nothing but IV. Her cultures will come in overnight so I should know if it is bacterial tomorrow morning check. My experience is that if it's bacterial and healable the level of antibiotics they gave her last night and today should have made a difference. If it's viral then her only hope is to stay hooked up to support until her body responds to kick it. Her temp was never terribly high - 101.8 or so high - so no spiked fever. And that has come back to 100.8 or so today with fluids. I don't know, they don't know yet, but I sure am glad I got her and momma on the trailer and out of here when I did! |
