We have a strangles outbreak in our area. I would like to keep competing and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for precautions?
My horse is vaccinated for it but can still get it and I could still bring it home to others.
Do you/can you spray stalls down at competitions with something? Disinfecting wood is likely impossible but maybe there is something I could do?
Bring my own water?
No touching horses/people/dogs for either of us
or should I just stay home? This isn't something that happens in this area much

Sounds like you have done all you can do. And it’s really impossible to prevent it. A horse can touch its nose on a panel 10 minutes before you got there and your horse could touch same spot and you wouldn’t even know. Either go and don’t worry about it , or stay home.

Anytime things are going around our entire boarding barn just stays home. The owner doesn’t want anything brought back because it’s a private place and many people who board don’t go anywhere and don’t want their horses sick. It’s no fun because most of my spring/summer is usually shot. As of right now I don’t have a barrel horse so not hauling anyways. If I was in charge of my own horses on my own property I would go during almost any “outbreak”.
Strangles isn’t usually going to kill a horse. It runs its course and many of the aged horses with strong immune systems aren’t going to get it anyways.
I was hauling my friends 5 year old mare this spring and stalled her next to my friends horse who happen to test positive for strangles 4 days later. So it’s a good chance she was next to the horse while it was conraingious and she never got it nor did any other horse on the property.
