And where are you located?? We’re thinking of making a road trip to get a trailer load of hay if we could save some $$$.

Here In so cal I pay 14-19.00 a bale depending on quality. That is including delivery and stacking. Alfalfa is grown all over down here so it’s one of the few cheaper forages. I pay almost 30.00 a bale for grass hay. Lol.

I have a friend that makes an annual trip to ND for hay...guessing this is why!!!
I’m paying $16ish for small 50-60lb bales, and $23 for 100lb bales.

I pay $4.00 a bale,  I have to haul it, but the farmer lets us borrow his flatbed and he loads it with one of those fancy bale grabbers that loads 8 at a time.
I've paid up to $5.50.
We feed every day, so around 450 bales a year is what we are up to with 3 head.  I couldn't afford horses at the prices some of you pay! Either that or would definitely go to rounds.

Our hay market, central Illinois, has been all over the place. Two weeks ago, you'd pay $8-11 just for GRASS, more for alfalfa and that's of you could find it. This past week things settled down to normal, $4-6 for grass or alfalfa and that's this year's first cutting. This is small square price.

I pay $13/bale and bales avg 65 pounds.

Curious what it sells for in New Mexico, that's where all of our alfalfa around here comes from.

We were paying $130 for a 3x3x8 bale...guessing it to be around 900-1100lbs. Really felt like were were getting a decent value for that bale. One bale would last at least 2 weeks feeding 6 horses generously.
Now our alfalfa source only wants to keep 3x4x8 bales, claims they weigh double, and charges double...But they only last a few days longer, and my brain tells me an extra foot of hay doesn't make the bale weigh double LOL.
So we started buying the 3 strand bales (100ish pounds) for $23...and we're feeding as much as we can afford to and the horses are dropping off...the fatties still look good, but they'd look good on air lol...they older horses and more lean built ones you can really tell a difference.

So I guess the simplest route would be drive an hour or so for the 3x3x8 bales.
Or we could figure fuel costs and possibly make a major roadtrip LOL.

Alfalfa is going up all over the country right now. There is a huge drought in most of the alfalfa producing regions and the export market is up as well. 3x4 will weigh considerably more than 3x3 (almost double). Most places like 3x3 because they are easier for people to feed and they can add more margin in them.

Freight is also up across the board. So, most hay is going up or will be going up very soon. Whether it will level off or continue to rise, remains to be seen. I think it could continue to increase, if the drought continues or worsens.

My experience is that most 3x3 will weigh about 750-800lbs, but as with any bale, it can vary substantially. I have seen supposedly 4x5 round bales range anywhere from 750-1150 and that is a big difference. I think most bales generally weight less than most people think they do.

I sold first cutting Orchard Grass Timothy for $5.25 out of the field.

I paid $6 for first cutting alfalfa that wasn’t great.

I just paid $340/ton delivered on first cutting New Mexico hay on big 3x4x8 bales supposedly weighing 1400# per bale. This is the first time trying it. I don’t want to pay that much but for guaranteed analysis of 22% protein I have to try it. I think it’s insane to pay that much but I was desperate for great quality alfalfa. It’s hard to get around here and there have been problems with blister beetles.

I raised my own alfalfa for 7 years. I miss the supply but not the headache so I see why it’s so expensive!

For a 50 lb bale first cut her in middle TN it's currently $8.00. But that should - or should I say I hope that goes down due to the decent amount of rain we have had. Most got 3 cuts last year and some even squeaked out 4.

Western Colorado - Average is $6-$8/70-80# bale. It's going to be a little higher this year because we had only 70% of our snow pack. Some only have 2 weeks left of water.
