| With horse shopping the private treaty ads seem to be more common as time goes on. I understand the pros and cons of this and hoping to skip the debate on that topic for now :)
Anyways while shopping what is the correct time to ask the price? I don't want to waste their time or mine but I also don't want the seller to think I am just nosey. Does one ask the price right away or ask any questions that may not have been covered in the ad and if the horse still seems to be something we are interested do we ask the price after those questions? What is the "correct" way to approach the pricing question on these private treaty ads? |

That is the first question I ask because I shop on a budget and I don't want to waste their time if they are asking more than I can afford. But I go by the add too, so if they are a 1D/2D horse then I won't ask because I KNOW they are out of my range, unless it is an older (20+) aged horse. |

I send a short message introducing myself and explaining what I'm looking for, and ask the price.
If it's out of my budget, I thank them for their time and let them know I'm out. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | If I were shopping for my next horse and its a private treaty that would be the first thing I would ask is what's the price, I dont to be wasting my time or the owners if its out of my price range. So right off the bat I would be asking, no beating around the bush for me. |

ETA people also seem to think private treaty=over $30k. The horse I asked about was $7,500. Some sellers just simply don’t like listing the price.

It's a privacy thing and I totally respect that!!
And of the few I've messaged on, only one was just WAY out of the price range I figured it to be in. |

| For some, Private Treaty, means it depends on who you are. Lots of breeders might give a young horse away to the right trainer if it means giving that young horse a great start, and possibly prove the sire or dam. So in my opinion it isn't right to start with the price question. I'd also state that if you are looking for a deal, PT is probably not for you.

| I sent an email to the owner stating that I was not a top 100 rider, but a solid rider capable of top 2D or maybe 1D with the right horse, and that her horse would not be continued on the futurity road in 2018. That I would be stepping the horse back and getting to know her, to go on as my new open horse for the future. She replied that this was exactly what she wanted for her horse, added the asking price, and negotiations went from there.
