I recently bought a new horse (big 16.1 son of Royal Shake Em) who had been turned out to pasture for the last few years and his hooves were trimmed "sparingly." Of course, when I bought him, I had his feet trimmed. It will take 2-3 trimmings, the vet and farrier say, before his feet will be the way they should be. His soles are thin and he is bruising and ouchy, to the extent that last week, he was laying down and didnt want to put pressure on one hoof. I thought it was an abscess, but it wasn't. He is 90% sound today, but ouchy on different surfaces. While we are waiting on new growth, should I...
Put front shoes on him
OR
Put Cavallo (or whatever brand) boots on him to ride him since he's nearly completely sound in pasture.

He is 8 years old and has never been shod, but now he will be used and I'd like to keep him sound. I have been applying Venice Turpentine daily and I also just got my Keratex in the mail. I will start that. Thoughts?
Note: he's not over at the knee. He was starting to take a step. I guess taking 35 pictures to get 1 good one was boring to him.

I bought a horse off the track with thin sole. I used dura sole few times a week and rickens hoof paint. The rickens really takes the sting out.

THANK YOU! He hasn't been handled much in the last few years, but he's gentle and takes easily to new things even when he is fearful. He remembers all of his training though! He's broke NICE! Just needs handling and hauling, oh, and to get his feet back in order. LOL

Are you working with a farrier who trims to shoe or with a trimmer who specializes in barefoot performance horses?

Makes a difference.

My BIL shoes, his are all barefoot now but his trim is different than how the guy who trims mine and has taught me to trim - we agree to disagree and not talk about trimming.

If your long term goal is to keep him barefoot then find a good barefoot trimmer if you don’t have one and keep on keeping on. Consider that it will take some time for tendons, ligaments, etc to adjust and that could be contributing to the soreness more than thin soles unless you’ve done X-rays to verify that they are thin. Think of wearing high heels all night and then taking them off - your feet do not feel like your feet for a little bit.

I dealt with this once - horse was trimmed too short (mms from coffin bone) and my horse laid down for days, even with pain meds from the vet.
We put pour-in pads on for two shoeings and never had a problem after that.

Venice of Turpentine on soles. Will harden his feet. Also a good biotin supplement like farrier formula

Think of wearing high heels all night and then taking them off - your feet do not feel like your feet for a little bit.

This^ my farrier is not a barefoot performance trimmer. He was trimming by barefoot guys where they were walking on their soles. The sole was rounding around the toe so to speak. I would get X-rays of his feet. I happened to be at my vets when a farrier was there who is like a farrier guru. I had him look at my horse just because the opportunity presented itself, vet thought shoe job looked good. He watched him walk and said if we take films he will be off in his angles, we did and he was. Bob did his feet and all of this horses behaviors that I attributed to bratty behavior, flipping his head all the time, not standing still to get on went away-he was never off, short stepping or lame, just uncomfortable.

X-rays will tell you a lot and save you money and headaches down the road. I now drive an hour to this farrier and pay $125 for fronts only but I am pretty confident that I will not be paying for hock injections etc for quite a few years.

I like your new guy, have fun with him!

If you face book search/ join ...hoof rehab help. There are ways to improve the diet to improve the hoof which will improve those thin soles.

I had a mare like that. Wide web aluminum shoes and Durasole kept her sound and comfy.

I have one with thin soles & walls, we thought he was navicular. He had fronts for 6 years now all year, but this winter we pulled his shoes. I put him on BioMane and holy cow did it change his feet. They do grow a bit faster now, which is why we pulled the shoes. He went from 8 weeks to 5 1/2 to 6 weeks between resets. I also used/use Durasole on him now. He's been mostly fine for 6 months now barefoot. He had a couple touchy days when he got loose one night & went trotting down the white rock parking area. But otherwise daily life he's fine. When he had shoes I just had regular shoes on him & he was fine all the time. I'd suggest just putting shoes on & maybe getting Durasole or something equivalent & just applying it when you pick out his feet. I do mine about twice a week, daily the first week after being trimmed.

I have a mare with very thin soles. When shod she is 100% sound but when her shoes come off she is so tender it is sad. I keep her shod all the way around when competing and fronts only in winter. I have tried letting her go without shoes in the winter and she ends up sore all over from trying to compensate for her sore feet.

I am on week 2 of the Keratex now (no longer required daily, but I am still doing it. Shh, don't tell!) He is sound to ride, but still ouchy if I lead him over an area with pebbles, etc. It is also raining daily, so that's probably part of the soreness. I think I'm going to measure his feet for Cavallo boots to use when riding until his new feed routine and Keratex and trims get him back right. They are affordable, seem easy to apply, and would provide some protection when riding.
