| So I bought a unit a couple months ago, and my local vet isn't real familiar with these yet for giving advice. I'm wanting to know from those that use these religously how often do you nebulize during the week, and how far out before you run? Also, I only have the Silver that came with it, but where does a person buy albuterol for these units? My vet sells ventipulmin but I know albuterol is cheaper. I have a mild bleeder that also coughs when stalled over the weekend shows or trailered for a long time. So I bought this to help with those issues. I call equi resp and they can't give out legal info on how often to nebulize, it drives me nuts. My vet hasn't given me good advice and so I'm asking this to those that can definetly say it's helped their horses and what your routines are. Thank you |

Personally a steroid for controlling the inflammatory response while being trailered or stalled would be more important and beneficial then just a Bronchodilator like albuterol or ventipulmon. I'd talk to him about something like dex either oral or injection, steroid inhalers like fluticasone or steroid solutions you nebulize like budesonide (pulmicort). I hope that helps. |

Location: North Dakota | your vet should be able to figure out the dosage for albuterol or other inhalants and give you a perscription to go to a local pharmacy to purchase. Be sure to comparison shop as most pharmacys have their "price point" specific drugs they sell. I use albuterol up to 4 times per day for IAD. I was told there is an inhaled dexamethasone in case there is a future flare up rather than give injectable dexamethasone. I'm not the best at knowing what to treat a bleeder with but if you're vet doesn't have a good idea about what to use, maybe you should get a second opinion.......AND I'm on the fence as to whether the silver is all that great....especially if they have the essential oils-I would think it would be so overwhelming for the animal. Honestly a couple of cc's of saline (like sterile plain eye wash) would probably give you an idea of whether the nebulizing would help and then work on a treatment plan with your vet. |

I see you suggested fluticasone-which as far as I know is OTC Flonase. If you know, would you share the dosage you've been given in the past of the fluticasone? |

Our vet recommended Dex for my gelding and we only used it a couple of times because it made him colicy. We used an EquiResp on him the day before, the day of, and the day after a show. If there was 5 days/a week between races we would use it on him once or twice that week too. It also didn't help that he was an absolute monster to give things to orally. Using the nebulizer is time consuming but worth it, after a while he was good and we could tie him up and put it on him then I could go do other chores around the barn. I just always made sure he was within eyesight in case something were to happen (he was accident prone). |

The rx Fluticasone is a mdi inhaler. Flonase and the actual inhaler are two different things. You'll need a prescription for the mdi inhaler. I'm not sure about using Flonase. Flonase is more for nasal congestion or inflammation because it's a nasal spray. The fluticasone mdi inhaler is for lungs. I edited to add my vet said dexamethasone inhaled solutions for nebulizers are not approved in the US. In Europe they are but not here. I use budesonide (pulmicort ) as a steroid to nebulize.
So how many times a week does a person nebulize these steroids or is it pre race ? I left a message with my vet this morning but no call back as of yet. Are the steroids used in place of the silver and always used then? Thanks. |

I did a full treatment of 30 days with the budesonide and itrapropium bromide (like albuterol but lasts 2 to 3 times longer). After treatment I got another bal to make sure the inflammation was gone then I just use as needed. My horse had petty severe inflammatory airway disease that he has to be completely off of hay. He now is under control and gets Nebulized pre race. I nebulize the itrapropium first to open the airways to allow the steroid the best chance at delivery then follow with the budesonide. You can also use it when symptoms arise then stop when they at better. The biggest help was limiting the dust environment and obviously either watering or no hay but... for symptom treatment like when being stalled or pre race I always still nebulize. I also have used the fluticasone inhalers with albuterol inhalers. I don't use the silver. I already spend time nebulizing actual drugs I don't have a reason to use it. |

That is only a nasal spray form of fluticasone. It is not the same form of fluticasone in an mdi inhaler for actual lung inflammation. The fluticasone mdi inhaler is called flovent and you need a prescription.

The unfortunate part is he doesn't sound like he even knows what dose you should give if he doesn't even know where to get it. You get it from a human pharmacy. I go to Walmart for my pet prescriptions. They seem to be the cheapest. If you don't have a wally world close you can go to good rx. Com and get coupons for other local pharmacies. Print it off and take it in with your script. It cuts the prescription cost down a ton. |
