Location: Texas | Ok, out of curiosity and hope this doesn't start a blood bath ........ A near by county is starting the process of putting in a slaughter house(Cows, goats and pigs NOT HORSES) and it has the whole community upset and in an uproar debating smell, waste, and water consumption ........ Am I missing something huge on why this is a bad thing? im really interested in this and open to hearing opinions so everyone please be nice

| Could everything be getting stirred up because of a bunch of vegetarians? Everyone needs to understand that all processing plants have to meet EPA standards. Sorry, bu I just like my steak and bacon too much. We have a huge chicken pluckin plant near where I live and this gives a lot of people jobs. Not much into chicken but someone has to do this. About the same thing. |

Location: Texas | I feel the same as you! look up Tyler co slaughter house Woodville Texas. Those folks are in a major up roar. They are worried about where the water will come for such a place butttt I asked if they would be upset if a community splashpad was put in? |

Location: Texas | The whole little town is BUT I'm sure one person has got everyone stirred up. They said its bad for the environment. They have a facebook page petitioning the slaughter house, went to the local news stations.

| Back in the 80's being anywhere downwind of Commerce City, just north and east of Denver, was a very stinky proposition. I remember hardly being able to breathe one trip where we had to skirt that direction due to I-25 and I-70 snagging up at the Mouse Trap. The air quality was BAD for miles, generally to the east. |

Location: The best kept secret in TX | We have a slaughter house in Weatherford in the middle of town... In fact, they built a park around it... Haven't noticed any smells... People don't seme to mind at all. Here is a photo with Hamiltons... 
ETA: Sorry the photo is so small. The left hand side of the photo has the meat market circled and the green area is the park. All the other little blue dots are businesses. Softball fields, businesses, even a nature trail and play area for kids.

| There was one in the town I went to college in. It smelled really bad on the days they boiled the blood. But that was a long time ago and practiced have changed I bet.
There’s a sugar beet factory in Ft Morgan CO. The slaughter plant there doesn’t get near the complaints for stench that the sugar beet plant does.
In your case it sounds like it’s the thought of processing animals that’s causing the issues, not the actual “environmental issues” like they are claiming. |

I've been gone from CO since 1987 so I'm not sure the Commerce City plant is still operating. Suburban growth may have pushed it out. It was not far at all from downtown Denver so pretty pricey real estate in there if they kicked it out and upgraded the area. |

We have a Tyson chicken plant here in town, the only thing that bothers me is when you see the trucks bringing in the chickens for slaughter, hurts my heart to know where they are going so I look the other way, I have to drive by it all the time and its down the road from one of my Vets here..
Its clean and never had a bad smell coming from the place and theres homes and businesses all around it and restaurants not far from it, been there for many many years.. But so sad seeing the chickens sitting in cages on the trucks.. So like I was saying I look the other way when I drive by.
Edit to add: And TLU Campus and the Baseball diamond is right across the street from the plant.

| EPA controls the release of odors. Someone complained about the Rainbow bakery in Dallas and they had to retrofit all their ovens at $100,000 a piece. No more baking bread smell to bother anyone. Personally, baking bread is about at the top of my good list but I guess to people who don't eat bread it could be a bad thing. I guess these folks didn't grow up in a house where bread was baked.
EPA is not going to let odors come out of a plant. Let them move somewhere else and give others jobs. |

The smell from sugar beets is hands down one of the worst smells I have ever experienced. I rodeoed in the Central Rocky Mountain Region for college, and we had to travel all through CO/NE/WY, and oh my gosh, driving by those sugar beet fields and the plant was almost unbearable. I have a pretty strong stomach and can get through most anything, but that is bad. Slaughter plants are nothing compared to the sugar beets.
We would always joke when driving by the miles and miles of feedlots and pulling into certain towns, that it "smelled like money". |

Location: Bastrop, Texas | Sugar beet stench is pretty nasty. It smells like moldy, musty rotten hay combined with the smell of burned sugar.
Not all industry creates bad smells. Anyone here ever been to Hershey, Pa? I don’t think I could ever get tired of that. I guess that’s changed, but back in the day it was sheer heaven. |

When the wind is from the right direction near those areas...you can sure smell it. But thankfully here folks are not yet so far removed from where their food comes from. When they are asked about the smell they will often say: "Smells like money" |

I think, if I remember from what I read, they cannot process pork as it is considered unclean. Do some more research on it. I have no dog in the fight since we don't live down there anymore
I know they tried to start one in the China area and were shut down, then again in sour lake. That didn't work. So now they are trying in Woodville.

I think they are passed that and just worried on water and smell now ...... They need to research the company better they are passing a lot of judgment on Riceland Farms and the contributing investors ... I dunno I know I don't have a say its not my county its just bothered me. Everyone that has come to me on the situation is worried on water because they are always on water consumption ban and as one lady quoted me "the community smelling like a gut bucket" |

That's interesting because the Miller brewing plant on 35 in Fort Worth has a very distinctive smell when you pass by, lol. Guess no one minds the smell of fermenting beer  |
