So I've been beating myself up all day.....im exhausted and hoping someone has some helpful input.
My stepdaughter just left last night after staying at our house for the past 10 days. When she came she had the same rash shes had on her neck for the past several months and came up and ask me to put calamine lotion, which I did like I do every other weekend. I asked her if she though it was the shirt she wore that day, shes seems to have sensitive skin, but nothing she could thing of as to why she still has it. The next morning she came up and ask if I could wash all her sheets I told her sure...she still complaining about the rash and says her head itches her mom says she has a dry scalp and ask if I have anything to help with it. Well dandruff shampoo is the only thing coming to mind and told her if we got to town we could pick some up if not id be to a Walmart sometime and could get her some. Well the week flew by as I took the kids to Vacation Bible School all week. About 5 days in she ask me to braid her hair so I did. While doing so I checked for dandruff finding none, thought ill check to see if I can see lice, I see none but really wasn't expecting to see any, but honestly don't know what im looking for if would even be able to tell if I did see any. She has a weird bump on her head and I told her to please remember to show her mom --- Sorry for getting so detailed with this all.
Anyway this morning my husband gets a texting stating she does in fact have head lice. Im assuming her mom found this after she ask her to look at the spot I mentioned. I Cringe! I shouldn't cringe, but I do. Why wasn't I more thorough when I checked her? Anyway I have 2 babies at home of my own and think O my gosh, what a mess. After a phone call to my mom who completely calms me down and think this is going to be ok. Well fortunately we have been home very little this last week. And very rarely do her siblings have head to head contact with her (shes 10 years older) so they share nothing, and she actually has her room and bathroom in the basement until the others get alittle older. So all day long im searching for any sign of lice on my kiddos, have found nothing and still see nothing. Spent most of the day laundering what my step daughter may have come in contact with and doing google search after google search (I feel very informed at this point). But I feel like I failed her as a stepmom for not seeing this? Or questioning the rash alittle more? From what I read she has probably had this for weeks, someone should have noticed. And im not blaming her mom because its no ones fault and I definitely don't want my stepdaughter to feel like its her fault, because she got it from someone else. I thought at first she could have got it from vacation bible school....but the more I read it sounds like for it to really itch she had to of had it for longer than a week, I read up to 4 weeks before its can start to cause itching?!
Anyway after cleaning our house and inspecting everyone how worried should I be that it will show up on the rest of us after a week? My stepdaughter comes back in 4 days for Fathers Day weekend and hoping its gone, but will prob be running everything through the wash again just to be safe. Im appreciative that her mom let us know, but she is such a poor co parent as to letting us know any details and I do not speak to her, haven't in years because of the disrespect between all of us. But I sure would like to know of they all have it? I guess it doesn't matter at this point anyway......it is what is it.

My youngest son brought home head lice TWICE from school and my boys share a bedroom. No one else has ever gotten it. You did right.. by washing everything... they make a spray you can spray furniture and carpets too.. also there is a spray you can buy in the shampoo section called lice shield.. I started spraying my son's hair everyday before school, he hasn't had it since. I know the feeling when you discover lice, they are creepy things! Makes my head itch just thinking about it! I also wanted to add, when I found lice on my son, I washed everyone's hair with the lice shampoo, just as a precaution.

Thanks. Yep I bagged everything up that couldn't be washed and dried of hers. Still no sign on us. Keeping my hopes up. Reading, saying a lot of families just have one kid come home with it and the others never get infested, so hoping this is true with our case. I did order a lice shampoo and comb off Amazon so I can be prepared in the future. Thanks to those who replied.

It sounds like the real work is getting it off the head which I fortunately didnt have to deal with, my sympathy goes out to her mom, she has a ton of hair.

When I was in town the other day I noticed a business in the shopping center and it was a professional lice removal service. I never knew they actually had those! I'm glad schools out for now.. no worries about them bringing any home. When I found out my boy had lice, the first thing I did was call the school nurse and let her know.. she thanked me and told me no one ever calls to report it, they just treat their child and go on.. but by then there's no telling how many other kids got infested.

I had a friend whose son got reinfested so many times I lost count---she treated him every time but apparently the child that started the outbreak never got rid of his. . . . I still don't understand why the school didn't just send him home until he was lice free???? (Yep, my head is itchy from reading this!!)
