| I'm just a few days away from picking up our new trailer and I'm just wondering if it's a good idea to put shavings on the floor. The floor feels very padded already with the mats in there and I probably won't be traveling very far, all the places I want to go ride at are pretty local.. but it seems like every trailer I see or that we looked at had shavings in it. I planned on using our power washer on it after each use to keep it nice. |

| If I'm travelling a long distance I do like to put a small amount of shavings in there if my horses pee. If I'm close to home then no, since my horse probably won't pee in the short time he is on the trailer anyway. |

| To each his own, but I use shavings to absorb urine. It reduces the amount of urine that gets through to the floor of your trailer (beneath your mats).
Cleaning your trailer out after each use is definitely a good idea. However if you've yet to experience pulling trailer mats out to clean out urine that leaks through, it is an exhausting job. Trailer mats are heavy! Have some heart pills handy. |

| I put down a bag of pellets and then a bag of shavings on top. Seems like my horses always pee, no matter the distance. And of course they all poop, too. I pick out the piles and wet spots every time I unload, and those two bags can last for quite awhile. We have WERM flooring, so no mats to pull. But I think my horses are more comfortable with the shavings in there. I have hauled without shavings, and the floor does get really slick and nasty. |

Location: South Georgia | I do not use shavings. I have a horse styled stock trailer, as in there are 2 or three rails of open slots at the top on each side. A few months ago when I went to haul my mare to the vet, the condensation was on the mats and it was slick, so I put some shavings in there. I thought it was a good idea. What I did not anticipate was the snow flurries that would be produced by the shavings in the trailer that has a good bit of air flow. 10 minutes into the 2 hour haul, I had to pull over and put a fly mask on my mare to help save her face. She was covered in shavings! As soon as we got to the vet, I asked my husband to take all the shavings out! It was horrible.
So if you do use shavings, be sure they are the super chunky ones. |

| Yes with traditional mats for absorbency and so they donβt get slick.
I plan to have polylast put in the trailer weβre buying so I wonβt use shavings at that point. |

Location: Missouri | I don't use them, especially in warmer weather bc they just blow all over the place in my stock trailer, so it's a waste. I hose off the mats every time I use it when warm enough, and pull the mats up a few times a year.
If I'm going a longer distance (very rare), I will put down those pellet type shavings so my horse will pee. |

Oh my gosh the first thing my horses do is either pee or poop in the trailer!!LOL To the OP my trailer is ALWAYS bedded with a good amount of wood chips. Not only do they absorb urine, but you can wet them down in the summer to keep the trailer cool while your going down the road. |

This. Mine wear soft rides to cushion the bouncing, shavings to absorb the pee. |

Man no kidding on how heavy the trailer mats are, that's why my hubby pulls them out for me and he uses vise-grips to pull out the mat's and after my cleaning he puts the mat's back in.. Heres a picture of the type of vise-grips he uses just in case some dont know what they are, they are very handy in pulling out mat's.

| I think I'll do the shavings... I don't need anyone slipping. Thank ya'll! It's an inexpensive investment in the safety of my horses. |

If you have one that always pees in a trailer then I think shavings are a must have. |
