My mare decided to acquire this lovely puncture wound last week by running into the latch of the gate. Had the vet out. She wasn’t too concerned. Said it’s about an inch to inch and a half deep. Flushed it out. Shot of banamine. Tetanus shot. $600 later....

I’ve been cold hosing several times a day. Flushing with betadine. Giving 12 SMZ tablets, twice a day. The swelling has gone down considerably since I took this picture. She is completely sound. Trots around, happy as a bug. The only issue is, she still has a hole. I have a race Wednesday and Saturday. I figured I could definitely draw out of Wednesday. But would really like to run Saturday, given how we are sitting in points.

Just was looking for opinions. If she’s sound, would you go for it? Or wait until the hole closes up before running again? Vet says as long as she’s sound, there’s no reason I can’t take her. My farrier, who’s an exceptional horseman, also said the same after seeing her move out. But I want to do right by her...

If she is sound run her. Only thing I might change is the breastcollar depending on where it sits and if it rubs.

If she is sound I don’t see why you could not run her.

If she’s feeling good I don’t see why not. You might want to run without a breast collar, for comfort’s sake.

I would not even consider running until that hole was closed... The risk of infection or irritation from dirt and nasty arena stuff (poop ext) ... To great for me ...I'd also be worried about ripping cuts bigger that are deeper than the skin as my horse stretched and worked hard.

Take the breastcollar off - she's got another week to heal before you'd run her.  Your vet ok'd it, she'll be fine.

No, I would give it at least 3 weeks to heal befor I would be running, I would worry about the muscle tearing.

Do you have just a ton of things lined up after Saturday? If not I wouldn't even be concerned about this weekend. If there are more important things in the following weeks I would wait. But then again horses are a lot tougher than we are and can handle more. You know your horse. Keep it clean and give banamine before you run just in case it is tender.

We have laid low this summer as far as races go, as we’ve had other priorities. The Saturday race is actually the only little series we’re running currently. The Wednesday race is a fundraiser jackpot for the annual rodeo, which is why I’m not concerned with missing that one. But the Saturday race is the only actual date I have scheduled for this month. Next race isn’t until the end of next month.

I appreciate everyone’s opinions and thoughts on this. I certainly don’t want to hurt her further and I understand how strenuous barrel racing is on a horse. I turned my gelding out and she’s been running and doing roll backs for the past half hour, wanting to be let out.

I guess I’ll just keep doing what we’re doing and see what my gut says on Friday night/Saturday morning.

I wouldn't until the swelling went down. That just looks uncomfortable to me.

Even if it looks good on friday/saturday I would still pass on running just to be on the safe side, I would worry about that muscle and with all the pulling and streaching will be doing to it on the inside, but thats just me, I have seen others run with something worst, but I'm one of the ones to want my horse feeling its best..

This is her today. Don’t mind the pink, it’s just fly ointment, that oily stuff doesn’t like to come off. Continuing with cold hosing, etc. stretching her out throughout the day. She runs around at liberty. Have a message in to get her massaged and see about any residual soreness.

Personally I would run her, I would also get some type of tape (butterfly tape maybe) to tape that closed so no dirt would get into while you make your run. Then remove it once you are done.

That still looks quite swollen to me with edema sitting in the bottom of her chest. Im not changing my thoughts on not running her.

And sore injured horses run at liberty all the time, if they would only do what was safe and their injury could handle there would be no need for stall rest. I take pasture activity with a rather large grain of salt with injuries or soundness.

Nope, I would not run this horse.

I would not. I don't really see the need to run an injured horse since I'd rather lose an entry fee than gain a vet bill.
