Overcoming Fear

My 8 yr old grand daughter had an incident at her finals in April. She did not get hurt it just shook us up.
She is now scared to ride. She wants to ride but she has this fear of hitting the ground. By no means do I want to force her to ride. I do want to help her to get over her fear.
Any suggestions?

I know when my horse crazy kid fell off, she got right back on. Her step-sister was more timid and not as horse crazy. I think I'd just leave it up to your granddaughter, but do encourage her to ride so she can get over the fear. When she says no, just go ahead and ride without her

Thank you. We are going to arena tomorrow. I am going to rider her horse. She is going to ride my niece small barrel horse. Our prayer is by the end of the night she gets on her horse and at least just walk around.
She can ride. I am amazed at her ability. Now she totally opposite. Thank you.
I just cant go spend a bunch of money on a horse she is not going to ride.

You are not that far from Josey's. Think about signing her up for a clinic. They are so good about working with scared kids heck they wrk with scared adults too. I think the next 2 1/2 day clinic is in September. Check their website. A lot of saddle time. Money well spent.

RE: Overcoming Fear
My youngest daughter, who is now 14, was always a really timid rider. Over the years she gained a lot of confidence but then had a set back last year when she had a couple of small wrecks right in a row. We ended up finding a super safe gelding that would go whatever speed she was comfortable and she has since gained a lot of her confidence back. So my suggestion would be to keep her on a extra trustworthy horse and let her go at her own pace until she feels comfortable.

Lots of prayer....she got back on her horse. She has not run barrels yet but just getting on helped. She did ride my niece barrel pony. After that she asked to get on her horse. We are going to take our time this summer and lots of practice. She rides great and I know that she will again. Thank you for your input and your prayers. Im still looking for that perfect horse.
