I have a wide shoulder flat backed horse that I am using my 5 Star pad on. I need more of a contour western pad. Any brand suggestions? I've always used 5 Star.. but it's causing my saddle to roll... makes him rounder through the shoulders.

How thick is your 5 Star?

I have tried 1/2", 3/4" and 7/8". I'm riding in caldwell saddles. Charon said not to use a 5 star on a flat backed horse.

All I use is the 5 Stars myself, but hear that Saddle right pads are nice pads. What type of pad did they say to use with your Caldwell, 5 Star is what I use with mine, my gelding is super flat backed and thick shoulder with descent withers and my 1/2 " 5 star is a good fit with my Caldwell.

Saddleright is about the only thing you’ll find thinner than a 1/2” 5 Star....

I would lean more towards a fit issue on this one though...

Thats what I'm thinking too if a 1/2" 5 Star is still making this saddle roll then I think its not the right tree in this Caldwell for this horse..

That's kind of what I am thinking too..  I'll try not to make this too long. I put my promax on him with a 3/4" pad... slid off his shoulder and kept sliding back and rolled. So then I tried my 7/8" just to see and it slid back off the shoulder But did not roll. once off the shoulder it stayed put. I put my maxxed out on him with 3/4" and it stayed on the shoulder put rolled.  So today I was going to try my 7/8 just to see what it will do. I told Charon and she said you don't use 5 star on flat back horses.  I kind of feel he needs the thinner pad for the shoulder and thicker pad for his body as it's not as wide if that makes sense. To look at him you would think Caldwell is a perfect saddle for him. This is the first time I've had such a hard time fitting a caldwell. Does make me wonder if it's the wrong saddle for him?

Well...not sure what I’m going to do with my 5 Star collection then, because I would consider 2 of our 4 flat backed for sure and a 3rd one is fairly broad but does have some wither. We ride all of them in 5 stars from a 1/2 to 1 1/8 with saddles that fit and don’t have any issues...I’ve never ever heard that you shouldn’t use a good quality wool pad with a slight contour on a flat backed horse.

I'm a little baffled by it too. That's all i have ever used. I'm thinking it's the saddles. May not be the right fit for him.

Heres my gelding that I use my promax on.. And I also have a Double J #10 tree that works really well on him also. Hes got that dip behind his withers so these saddles work with my 5 Stars the Caldwell I use the 1/2 and the Double J I use a 3/4..

5 Star has the most contour of any pad out there so not sure what you'd do if you have to have more contour.  I also agree it sounds like saddle fit and/or rolly polly horse that a saddle is just going to roll on until it matures more.

Hmmm...I ride Caldwell's too, and this horse doesn't look near as broad as my Promax horse. Have you tried any other saddle makes or just set a rocket on him to see? You might be dealing with a saddle fit issue.

If a 1/2" pad by 5 Star still allows the saddle to roll, I'd be thinking your saddle doesn't fit as well as it should (and probably has nothing to do with the pad).

Can you post pictures of the saddle on your horse's back (with no pad, and not cinching it)?

If you're horse is 3, I am going to guess your saddle is too wide for him, which would cause it to roll. But just a guess.

my promax fits the best on him with a 1/2" pad. Still slides off his shoulder but not rolling as bad. Charon told me to use a maxxed out on him but that was way too wide.  For now my caldwells are just the wrong fit for him.
