Elite Veteran Posts: 784 Location: USA	I have a wide shoulder flat backed horse that I am using my 5 Star pad on. I need more of a contour western pad. Any brand suggestions? What type of pad did they say to use with your Caldwell, 5 Star is what I use with mine, my gelding is super flat backed and thick shoulder with descent withers and my 1/2 " 5 star is a good fit with my Caldwell.

I put my maxxed out on him with 3/4" and it stayed on the shoulder put rolled. So today I was going to try my 7/8 just to see what it will do. I told Charon and she said you don't use 5 star on flat back horses. I kind of feel he needs the thinner pad for the shoulder and thicker pad for his body as it's not as wide if that makes sense. To look at him you would think Caldwell is a perfect saddle for him. This is the first time I've had such a hard time fitting a caldwell. Does make me wonder if it's the wrong saddle for him? ETA: He's only 3 Well...not sure what I’m going to do with my 5 Star collection then, because I would consider 2 of our 4 flat backed for sure and a 3rd one is fairly broad but does have some wither. We ride all of them in 5 stars from a 1/2 to 1 1/8 with saddles that fit and don’t have any issues...I’ve never ever heard that you shouldn’t use a good quality wool pad with a slight contour on a flat backed horse.

Hes got that dip behind his withers so these saddles work with my 5 Stars the Caldwell I use the 1/2 and the Double J I use a 3/4.. If a 1/2" pad by 5 Star still allows the saddle to roll, I'd be thinking your saddle doesn't fit as well as it should (and probably has nothing to do with the pad). Can you post pictures of the saddle on your horse's back (with no pad, and not cinching it)? If you're horse is 3, I am going to guess your saddle is too wide for him, which would cause it to roll. But just a guess.
