Can someone explain what #10 and flare means on a Pozzi saddle? Is the standard tree a normal 7” gullet? Trying to figure out what kind of Pozzi saddle I need for my horse. He’s 15.2 and is solid built. He’s got a good whither I wouldn’t consider it high. Buying used. Thanks!

My friend called Double JJ about all of this - gullet, bars, angles, degrees, etc. and it was all WAY over my head but they answered a lot of questions for her.

I believe their standard is a 6.5” gullet, but it’s been a number of years since I owned one:

I would call double j, or find a dealer near you. I was at a race recently and a dealer was there - he probably had close to a dozen bare trees and none of them were the same (that’s not limited to pozzi’s though).

The standard tree is a 6.5" gullet. These fit a good variety of horses and will fit a slightly stouter horse as well. Think smaller-average size QH.

#10 tree is just under a 7" gullet and it has more of a rock in the tree for a horse that has a low back or dip in their back. Think super high withered or slightly sway back. IMO 90% of the people that buy these don't need this tree.

Wide tree is similar to the standard but it has a 7" gullet and little less of a bar angle. These have just a little more room for a super stout or flat backed horse. If he's pretty stout I would go with this one. Think a very broad back.

Flare is where the front of the tree (the bars) flare out to accommodate the shoulder so is can come back under the tree when the horse strides out.

Just a tip...the tree will be marked on the latigo keeper. If its a standard it won't really say anything, but maybe "double j saddlery". The wides will be marked "WIDE" or "Wide Fit" and any other special tree it will say "#10" or whatever. Anything made prior to 2010-ish will not have serial numbers (under the swells/horn. These are most likely standard trees, because they really didn't start making a variety of trees until the "wide saddle revolution" which happened sometime around 2010 or later.

Thank you! That’s very helpful!

Do you know if the seats run small or if I get a 14” it’s like a typical saddle with a 14”?

Welcome! Most people say they run slightly big but I think they are pretty true. I’m 5’6 140 lbs and a 14” fits me perfect. I feel like most other saddles I’ve sat in I would need a 14” or a 13.5” if they run big. The double pros do run big. My 13.5” is roomier than my 14” pozzi.

I usually ride in a 13.5 or 14. My pozzi pro is a 13. The 13.5 felt too big.

When I had one it was a 14.5...I could have easily gone with a 14...I very comfortably ride a 15” Burns barrel saddle now.
