I lost Dan about an hour ago; he's my first horse to have to let go. Y'all have been beside me for questions about feed and supplements and just for me to say how much my old guy means to me. Chandler is out of town, which makes it even worse. When I called him he at first said "no," but when I told him how he looked and was acting, he knew it was time. Chandler was a year and half old when I got Dan; it would have been 19 years in September. Sean was with him at the end--i was a coward and couldn't do it, but I wanted someone he knew and loved with him. My heart hurts so bad; please pray for me to get peace and know that I did the right thing. . ..

I'm so sorry for you loss.

If it's any consolation, I was away from home when my beloved childhood buddy, JP, had to be laid to rest. My mom called me afterward and was pretty terrified to tell me, but I knew he was surrounded by my family and vet of 20+ years who all loved him dearly. I regret not being there, but they all loved him just as much as I did and certainly made the right decision.

Rest in peace to your beloved Dan.

Thank y'all so much. He took a big piece of me with him, but I'm gonna concentrate on the good memories like was said and not on him being gone. Sean just buried him by the barn in his favorite dusty rolling spot. He said our other three were laying down by him when he got there with the backhoe. Guess we humans don't have a monopoly on grief and loss. . . .

Hugs debra, never a easy thing to do, and I think as I get older its get harder on me when something like this is needed to be done, I know your heart is hurting since Dan was so special to you, but like I said Dan had a really long and good life having you as his human that loved and took such good care of him. We take care of our 4 legged babys better then we take care of ourselfs and I know he had the best care that anybody else could have giving him, hugs

Don't be like me when you lose an animal.  Somehow no matter what I feel guilt-ridden.  Getting old is just not fair whether you have four legs or two.   So sorry.  We've all felt your pain.

So sorry for your loss, they do take a chunk of our heart with them. I think most of us here have been in your shoes. It does get a bit easier, but I still miss my old girl after 2 years.
Hugs! You know you did the right thing even though it doesn’t feel like it right now.

I do feel some guilt, but deep in my heart I know I did the right thing. Sean had been trying to prepare me for several months now that this very well might be Dan's last year; I just figured it would be this winter. I think what's making it harder is that Chandler isn't here, and Doodlebug was very much his as much as mine. It would have been harder on C had he been here tho, so maybe that's why the good Lord let things unfold like they did. (If C had been here, I would not have been watching fish, and no one would have known Dan was in distress until this morning. So I truly believe God worked this out the best way possible for Dan.) Chandler sent me the sweetest text after I called and told him what was happening; my son helped me handle this awful thing even tho he was 9 hours away. He said he was praying for God to give him and me peace, and to give Dan deep green pastures with lots of fillies!!

That's what Daddy said, never have to worry about him hurting again. And that's what I'm focusing on. Thank y'all again for sharing prayers and your experiences with your 4 legged kids
