What do y'all do for your weanlings for winter blankets? Youngest I've ever had was a 4 year old so I've never had this issue. I know it doesn't get SUPER cold in TX, but when it gets wet and below freezing I do like to put a light blanket on mine. Do y'all measure them and then get one a little bigger than what they need at the start of the season and then sell it at the end of the winter season?

Thanks in advance!

I'd rather spend $1000 for a shelter to keep them dry in the winter and shaded in the summer, than $200 for a blanket I only use 10 times a year.

we get 30-40 below with the wind chill here in WY. They don't all have barns in pasture but trees near the creek or deep nasty draws. All do very well. Best thing you can do for a horse to keep them warm is forage. Hay 24/7 if it is cold and especially if you have snow.

I do have multiple shelters and a couple of trees (non are evergreen so don't provide much winter protection) but my mare that I currently have doesn't like to get under them. She won't use it, she's like Sam I Am from the childrens book. She doesn't care what it's doing outside. She WILL NOT get under it. I do have a round bale that I keep in front of her at all times from usually late October/early November (depending on when grass starts to die that year) till grass grows the next year. I don't usually put anything on her till it gets to or close to freezing or when she shivers.

As long as they got a wind block and plenty of hay to eat to help keep them warm I would not worry about blankets. It has gotton in the single digits here and never but a blanket on any of my horses, but the single digits are pretty rare here but it does happen.
