Say you had a horse that had a portion of the hoof wall sloughing off because of an abscess that broke out at the corronett band.  Seperation from the heel bulb to about the 3 o'clock position where there is a quarter crack.  How would you care for this horse?  The hoof wall hasn't come off yet, but it probably will since there is not real support for it.  The abscess was caused by a bruise on the heel bulb and worked around the side.

A picture would be a better way of explaining the sloughing of the hoof. I would be keeping this horse in a smaller pen so less movement, I had a gelding slice off the quarter portion of his front hoof super nasty cut, I was keeping it wraped for a few weeks, he took the back portion of his heel bulb off along with hoof, I just kept it clean as possible untill the new growth started to come in. Post a picture if you can.. I sure would not want that wall breaking off, OUCH..

I’d be working with a really good farrier in our area who I’ve used before to stabilize quarter cracks. The abcess and the fact that’s it’s already sloughing off adds complexity, but I’d be following their instructions to a t.

I’ve seen pictures of some pretty gnarly hoof issues that given enough time and proper care have grown out just fine - amazing really.

I would discuss with my farrier about removing the wall to a certain point to try to get ahead of the infection. Honestly the relationship we have would determine where we would go next. I trust his judgement and if he is wrong (or it goes wrong) I wouldn't blame him. He makes special shoes and casts so it would depend but we would probably go to one or both of those until we see results.

I'll get a picture.  Right now all you can see is the seperation at the coronett band.  The bruise was caused by the farrier trying to fix the quarter crack.  He put some epoxy on the back of the hoof trying to keep the horse from stepping on the shoe and pulling it off.  You try to fix one thing only to cause another problem.  Dang horses!

Yept a picture would be better, we all have a different ideal of what its doing. Are you sure its going to slough off?

I have had a few horses over the years blow a abscess out the corronett band that cause a hairline seperation alittle less maybe a little more then an inch across the top and as the hoof grew out the seperation grew out with the hoof, the seperation would turn into a hole in the hoof wall but never did slought off any part of the hoof, just turn into a hole as it grew out. So the abscess part would hollow out some but just grew down as the hoof grew, I think you will be ok, because the ones that I have seen just grew out.. Kinda hard to explain.

Had this happen last year. Mare had 2 abscesses in one hoof blow out at the same time. My barefoot trimmer kept her trimmed and we put her in hoof boots with pads. I also fed her 2 supplements. This took almost a year to fully resolve itself. The hoof grew out without chipping off and she is fine now.

I understand what you are saying.  Hopefully this one will hold.  I'll get some pics tonight.

This happenec to my elderly gelding abut 3 years ago.  The abcess blew out both the bottom of the foot and at the coronet band.  It was more than half way around from the front of the hoof to the heel bulbs.  The wall never completely sluffed off and the new hoof grew in under it without a problem.  My farrier did bevel the edges of the crack because it was pinching him every step he took.  Took less than six months for the new hoof to grow down.
