Years ago, I dealt with this with a pony that had long feathers. We clipped the feathers, treated and never an issue again. Recently, I noticed my 4 year old had “Scratches” on her right rear foot. Just below the ankle, but above the heel. It swelled up bad and she was tender when you touched it. My vet came out, treated and wrapped. Removed the wrap a week later, all cleared up and swelling gone. The wrap has been off less than a week and the dew poisoning returned. She has a very, very short coat. I didn’t think it was even enough to hold in any moisture. Her stall is dry and turn out is dry. I try not to put her away until she’s dry. I’ve had her over a year and NEVER had a problem before…Has anyone dealt with recurring Dew Poisoning/Rot? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. =)

I have a mare I've been dealing with for 2 years.  I cant get rid of it.  I've tried everything I can think of.   I'm stumped as well.

I feel your pain.....I had terrible luck with one mare I have. Any humidity and dew at night and she would break out and break out really bad. Finally, after many different attempts with different things, I started keeping her in the barn at night and then I didn't turn her out the next day until things dried up outside. Then, during the day, instead of putting her in a shady pasture, I turned her out in a pasture that had few trees so she had to be in the sun more and I let the sun dry things up and take care of the fungus "naturally".

I had done the wrapping and the washing and all of that didn't seem to help her at all. In fact, I thought the washing with the fungal shampoos made it worse.....and I don't think it was the shampoo btw that made is spread and get worse, I think it was the fact that I was messing with the scabs that had already formed.

I still have the mare....
and the mare swells like your mare does and she would be sore to the point of being lame when she has breakouts.

We are still on the same regime during the hot summer days here in Southern Oklahoma. Kind of a pain in the butt but it is what it is as they say. lol

Thanks BFN! No more night turn-out for her. Since I've had her, I haven't changed her routine at all and it seems it just appeared. She goes lame as well, but she's a bit of a diva.

None that I know of. She's fed Triple Crown Complete (Farm) and T and A.

My horse got it really bad this spring.  Turned into a bacterial infection.  Meds and wrapping and it's *almost* gone.  This horse usually gets it but I can control it with topicals.

I have heard you can use excalibur to wash it. Could you use fly boots like shoo flies to protect the legs?

I suspect alsike clover in the pasture, as the poisoning mimicks scratches.

If it is scratches sauerkraut works well, grab a handful vet wrap it on, repeat for a week and it will be gone

Husbands rope horse had it bad a couple summers ago.  I did clorox washes, it helped but finally had to put him on antibiotics to finally get rid of it.  His hair is still thin on that ankle but no longer broke out.

The ones I have had didn't get as bad as yours but the best thing I have found is the max strength Desitin

I have dealt with it and tried everything. I wash with a betadine shampoo, and then heavily coat with a Desitin and Furasone mixture. The Furasone helps with the healing process and the Desitin repels the moisture. This is the only thing I have that helps.

I have to leave before the dew burns off, so my only other option was 24-7 stalling. I also clipped the hair close to help with repelling the moisture.

I buy the cheap Desitin with the highest zinc concentration.

Desitin mixed with Neosporin. Put it on and wrap. Wash with iodine scrub let dry and repeat.

I have found with some tough cases that the triple antibiotic with desitin cleared it up and I kept zinc oxide ( desitin) or other kind on the places for quite a while after clears up and when grass starts being really wet at night like it is now and into fall. I have also had some luck with equiderma skin lotion when I see any starting back.
