Spinning off of the blanketing in the winter post, show me your DIY shelters? I have one gelding; prior to me having him I think he just made it out in the cold with the cows and did that this past year too. Which is fine, but now that he's in a different pasture near my house with not a great break from the wind and by himself, I'd like to make a 3 sided shelter with a roof. Any ideas how to do this on a budget? This is also not my property so don't want to make anything super permanent

i have seen the metal car ports with 1" plywood attached to three sides work good for one. If you have a lot of wind i would reccomend trying to anchor it to the ground somehow.

tractor supply or someone had a shelter mad of panels and an arched top that was covered with a tarp thing. Not much help but it was cheap and portable

Where are you located? I feel thereβs a difference in suitable shelter for the weather depending on what the weather is.
I personally would actually build something sturdy if you get a lot of snow or wind and build it on skids so it can be loaded onto a flat bed and moved if needed.

Thanks for the suggestions!! I live in southwestern VA so it's not terrible but last year it did get pretty cold with the wind chill and I also live on a hill/ridge where it gets pretty windy. Nothing like what others experience but still something I'm a tad concerned about on all those really cold windy days

sams club has a small cover for 45. I was going to get 4 round straw bales , putting two side by side with a 12 foot space, then the other 2 side by side with a cover of some kind. I figured if they had a good wind break , they would be fine.
