My husband and I have somehow gone from two horses to five over the past year. We have a two horse slant that has turned into a nightmare that we’re trying drop like a bad habit. I borrowed a friends stock trailer to pick up the last two horses and fell in love with how handy and versatile it was. I have always owned slant load trailers specifically made for horses and this last one is really making me bitter towards them. So,

Who hauls with a stock trailer?
What are the pros and cons?
What’s your opinion on open top trailers? (The kind you tarp)

Edited to add: I’m not hauling much right now being newlywed and still in school. He’s in the Air Force so we will be moving around soon. My horses all get along well and haul well. We also live in the south and it makes me panicky to know that if another big hurricane heads our way, I can only haul two, maybe three if we took the divider out and squeezed, at a time if we needed to evacuate or get somewhere quick.

My gelding LOVES the open top trailer. Our tarp finally fell apart (humid South Texas). He loads really well in it. In a horse trailer he will sometimes stop and I have to slap his butt or line him back up to go in. He just sometimes shows a reluctance to loading. But NOT in the stock trailer. The only con I have is no tack compartment. When the wind is up or there is rain that is a real inconvenience. However, we have a little 16 ft stock hard top and the nose has plenty of room for saddles and feed, hay, etc

Nothing wrong with stock trailers, I love a gooseneck stock trailer, thats all I use to haul with many years ago, and I would pick up friends along the way going to a rodeo or barrel race, we would just slant the horses and sometimes since I had a center gate I would have two up front and two in back.. But if its raining someone is going to get wet even with a trap since the sides are open just make sure the front has a trap to protect the horses from bugs and other trash from flying into the trailers or junk on the road that might get picked up from the truck tires,. And you can use the trailer for 4 wheelers, gators, moving furniture, a few times a few of us would go on a weekend trail ride and use the trailer for our camping, sleeping in it, great place to set up cots.. But like GLP said no tack room, when I had my stock trailer I use my bed of my truck for that, and if it was a short distant for hauling I would just saddle up at home and haul this way. Just made sure the stock trailer is not to short head wise {height}, some stock trailers are made short {height} head wise since they were mostly made to haul cattle.
Just make sure you use mat's so no slips. My trailer was a Gooseneck for hauling all types of livestock. I hauled cattle alot and used my gooseneck for my horses too after a good washing to get out all the cattle poop.
