I'm shopping for horse insurance and I would love to hear your opinions: The must haves, the don't need to have, the companies to avoid, personal experiences etc.

Thanks so very much,

I highly recommend Markel.  I have had them for years, have never had a problem with them paying on claims, whether it was a deep digital tendon injury that required stem cell or a two year old with a horrendous bone cyst that had to be euthanized.  I have mortaility on 3, surgical on one of them, and major medical on one.  Is has been a life saver and I will continue to insue any of mine valued at $10,000 or above.  We now use them for liability and property insurance on our cattle as well.

I use Horse Insurance Specialists out of Pilot Point, Texas. Luckily, I have never had to file a claim, but they are friendly, knowledgeable and easy to work with!

They have many options depending on what coverage you want and how much you can afford.

thanks for all the excellent recommendations. Any companies that I should stay away from? I know this might be a very personalized question but do you think is better to have a lower mortality coverage and maximize the major medical? I know our horses are priceless but just trying to make an informative decision. I wish I had unlimited funds unfortunately I don't LOL.

Thanks again :)

Rosie Bradley was wonderful with insuring my fut filly for what we know she is worth. I highly recommend her. I will only use her from now on.

I use Broadstone. They are one of the few that will allow you to have more Major Medical coverage than mortality. We raised our horses, and they are irreplaceable, so I have two horses with $1500 mortality and $7500 major medical. I want to be able to fix them if anything happens. I have another we paid for, and she has $10,000 mortality, and $7500 major medical.

My total annual premium for the 3 horses is $1093.

They have been great to work with.

I use Star H Insurance, underwritten by Hartford. They pay claims quickly. My major medical coverage is far more than my mortality coverage. That's how I want it. Not all companies allow this. And this company has no minimal premium.

I did use Horse Insurance Specialists about 10 years ago and they were a nightmare. They'd send past due invoices after I had paid on time and it was a hassle to deal with them.

This is who I went through. I haven't purchased any major medical yet. I just went with mortality through American Reliable. For $100 more I can get a basic major medical through the Hartford. I may do that next year. Not sure, I am not sold on the idea of it yet. I am ok paying out of my pocket and not having to worry about things being excluded, etc.

Is major medical a good thing to have? My biggest thing is that some of them have so many exclusions that it is hard to see if that's a good thing to spend the money or not.

Oh my gosh yes. For example, I had my guy scoped for ulcers last week. Vet perscribed a month of Gastrogard. The bill was $1500. I paid $366 (deductible and 66 farm call fee). This is just one example.

I rarely have a horse die, but I ALWAYS seem to have ungodly vet bills.

I have a stupid question that goes along with this. Does it matter what state you are in? If I am in Idaho and looking to insure do I need to go with a local company?

No, you don't have to go with a local agent. In my experience most companies that write insurance of this nature are licensed in all 50 states.

On the topic of horse insurance, I submitted a claim after the vet left last week Thursday and I received the check from The Hartford on Tuesday this week! Now that's fast.
