Looking at buying a 3 year old, at this time she is not papered as her mom died when she was 3 months old. The owners did not take DHA from her. Is there any way to still register this filly?

Thank you

I would think if theres a stallion report that was sent in with the mommas register information I dont see why it would be a problem to register the baby, I know things have really changed over the years. Just call AQHA and talk with them about this issue..

If you want to register her with the AQHA, you have to do it before the horse turns 4. We just had this same dilemma come up and unfortunately the horse had already turned 4 by the time we found out about her and were interested. I have a great contact at the AQHA, I will PM you her email and she can help!

By the time the horse turns 4 because of the issue with the mare?

Because we just registered one as a long 4yr old coming 5 with no issues. Got all the signatures to amend the stallions breeding report (luckily the same guy owned the stud and the mare) and sent in hair to DNA him. No problem. Even got a $25 check from AQHA like 6 months later because I must have added something up wrong and sent them too much money with the paperwork.

Just give them a call, I had to several times to make sure everything was in order - very nice and helpful folks who will tell you if it possible and what you need to do.

That’s great they let you! Had the dam of your horse ever had foals before? In our case, the dam was a maiden and hadn’t ever been DNA tested, so the AQHA didn’t have a record of her DNA to match up against the foal’s, and after that foal in question turned 4, the owners were SOL trying to get her registered. I’m not sure what being 4 has to do with it, if it matters about sex (passing along the DNA in question), etc., but according to my friend at the AQHA it’s darn near impossible (or was, before you got it accomplished!)

To the OP, I say keep trying if you’re that interested in the horse and planning on buying her. For us, the registration wasn’t super important (just going to be a recip mare to us), but I had inquired to see if it could be done. She sure was bred well, but not one we would want to pass those genes along, if you get my drift.

Just wondering if you got a good answer from AQHA about the papers.

Not sure - we had to pay to amend the breeding reports etc. and we had to submit hair for him to be DNA’d, so I’m guessing she had been DNA’d.

Best bet is to talk to AQHA

Here is what I found out:

The first step would be to have the mare be marked deceased, by returning the original certificate of registration to AQHA along with a statement that the mare is passed. Along with that you would need a transfer of ownership, a signed registration application for the foal and a statement that the dam died before testing could be performed on her and request that we use the grandparent’s DNA for registering the foal. However if the foal turns 4 years old (by actual foaling date) before we receive all of the above items, we will not be able to register the foal, due to the Parentage Verification rule and requirement. Parentage Verification can only be determined by DNA testing the sire, dam and alleged resulting foal. You cannot use grandparents or sibling horses.
