I have a mare that has been showing me shoulder pain. It appeared last September in her left shoulder. I’ve treated it with muscle relaxers, ice spa, chiropractic and magnawave. When I was stretching her left front today, she almost collapsed into the stretch, twice.  It made me remember back in September, she actually did collapse when we stretched that same leg.  Any guesses?  She also frequently carries her head to the right as if she’s trying to stretch out her neck/shoulder on her left side.  TIA. This one has me stumped.

obviously she has seen a vet, twice. They say muscular ( thus the prescription for muscle relaxers)

Sounds like she needs to see a vet.

A novel approach, but heck why not try it?

Maybe should have tried it 4 months ago, but late is bettter than never

She saw a vet in September and again a month ago.  I assumed that would be inferred as a source for the muscle relaxers.  They have determined it’s muscular but I have never had a horse go so deep into a stretch that they collapse into me.  I was looking for other opinions.  Not sure the snarky responses are helpful.

Scheduling x-rays now as a starting point.  At least she’s a mare.  She has other options

Was it a tear? Arthritis? Pinched nerve? Thank you

We have a chiro who works almost only on the neck and head. He has done some great things for horses I have seen. The other thing I really like is cranial Scacral therapy but that can be hard to find. My good barrel mare was always carrying her head to the right you could force her left but it was hard for her and she had a large lump on her neck. He fixed her up and now rarely needs a treatment. I do pair it with magnawave as well.

Sounds a lot like my mare!  Thank you. I’ll look into that!

Is she lame? And if so, was a diagnostic lameness exam performed by a vet including blocking out the lameness?

Not “limping” lame but is tight in her circles.  She flexed mild in her shoulder.  Nothing showed up below that.

If she is not lame enough to block out the lameness that does make things trickier.

Options if you and your vets are dead set on it being the shoulder:

-Radiograph the shoulder, see if there is any abnormalities.
-Inject the shoulder joint and monitor response to treatment.

IF you really would like to get down to the bottom of localizing areas of pain a bone scan would be an option. This is an imaging modality where they inject a substance that lights up areas of pain and inflammation on a bone scan.

Other things that pop into my head with a horse that just shows general "stiffness" in circles would be muscle abnormalities like PSSM. This can also make horses appear "sore" when different areas are flexed.

Thank you. We are starting with xrays and go from there.   Injections are a probable.  I’m okay with retiring her, if we can get her back to where she was.  But...I’d miss running her!!

I’m not the smartest person in the world but I’m smart enough to be able to tell from your original post that you had been to the Vet. You just have to spell things out for some people; their intelligence (if they have any at all) doesn’t include common sense.

Has the Vet ultrasounded the shoulder? If not, it’s probably time to do it. I’m wondering about soft tissue damage...a tear or something of that nature....if so, the  more you use her, stretch her or manipulate it you may be doing more damage.  Just a thought. Good luck.

I truly don't think GLP meant her answer to be tacky. 1DSoon--of course it was meant that way. I didn't read it the first time as been to a vet, so yes, sometimes including even obvious information helps some of us! I hope you figure out what's wrong and can fix it so you can keep running her. It's obvious you enjoy her

Tare yes. Vet showed me it was at a junction where two muscles cross over each other and one pulls the leg up when moving and the other brings the leg back down. It was right there. Gave him
A year off basically and he recovered. But always stiff on that side and didn’t want to re injure

Oh, I’m so sorry. I’m hoping if my mare needs time off, she can spend it being pregnant!

I didn’t mean to be snarky. I have fat fingers that my phone hates so I try to just use as few words as possible.

Sorry for being stupid. She could have got the muscle relaxers from a friend, people do it all the time when they get hurt.
