Location: Bastrop, Texas | Oh sheesh. My wife, Carol (Hollywood’s Fan on BHW), started this on FB. It really wasn’t anything “super”, honestly. I’d been riding my 3 horses and oddly Carol finally gave in to my repeated requests to ride this nice mare of hers. I think she was played out. I’m in love with this mare and think she’s pretty talented. For some reason today, she asked if I wanted to ride one more....Lassie. I jumped at the chance....”Sure!” We have a track that I maintain around the perimeter of one of our pastures (22 acres) that we loan out to a neighbor who keeps some cows on it, and all I was doing was straight line work. After about 20 minutes, I heard this loud crunching sound and looked over to see a pickup rolling over on the highway that runs past our pasture. I think the driver lost control and swerved sideways, clipping the shoulder and flipping twice.
The pickup came to a stop perfectly situated in an old approach. It was odd. This was about 250 yards away from me. I was afraid the driver was dead, judging from the speed and the way that pickup was crushed like a beer can. We ran up to the fence, and just then a fella and his wife also drove up. I couldn’t get through the fence on my horse, so I asked him to hold her. As I ran up to the pickup, the driver opened the door and started flailing and moaning. He was very disoriented and complaining of head, back and neck pain. His left arm was obviously broken. His teenage son was sitting in the passenger side complaining of neck pain and inability to turn his head. I told him to sit still and not move, while I had to practically forceably subdue the dad and get him to lay down and stay still.
His mid back was actually tender, so I had to assume he had a real injury, possibly a fracture, not to mention head trauma. He was writhing and not making sense. I got the bystander to sit with him while I took a look at the son sitting in the passengers side. I had to assume he had a c-spine injury because he had tingling in his arm and couldn’t turn his head (traumatic “torticollis”) Still he was neurologically intact because he could move all extremities. He was alert and fairly calm so I explained he could not move one bit until the paramedics arrived, so he could be properly immobilized and transported. I’d asked the bystanders to call 9-11, and they arrived within 15 minutes or so. I kept my hands on his face to keep him reminded to sit still. Fortunately the paramedics arrived and I helped them out until they got them ready to load. I don’t know how they are doing, but I’m guessing they are OK. I wouldn’t be surprised if the kid has a cervical fracture or significant injury.
The dad told be he had a seizure disorder and was on medication, so it’s possible a seizure caused the wreck.
I really didn’t do much except keep them from making their injuries worse, to be honest. That pickup was about as badly wrecked as any I’ve ever seen. I thought I was going to find a dead driver. Thank God I was wrong.
I got to thinking afterwards....what on earth possessed Carol to ask me to ride her young mare. I’ve been hounding her for a couple years. It’s almost eerie.

Wow Bear, you truly are a lifesaver! As a 911 dispatcher, I am SO thankful for people like you that arrive on scene at collisions and can keep the occupants subdued to keep from hurting themselves worse and provide pertinent information as a caller or relay it to the callers, who can update us. I struggle with "everything happens for a reason", but I do believe in fate, and that was absolutely a fateful ride!! |

But... A person doesn't even have to look as far as the U.K. socialistic system for Universal Healthcare. Just look at our own Government run VA system. Everyone thinks Universal Healthcare is just so wonderful, because they think they are going to get the same high level of care and it's for 'free'. No, you will not. Spend some time in the VA system and that will wake you up to Government run Healthcare.
ETA... Not to mention, Universal Healthcare does not work very well on most nations that are only 6-10 million people. So right, let's try it on 350 million people?!?!?!
Sounds great and utopic in 'theory', but turns out really bad in real life situations.
