Location: OKLAHOMA | Kinda of a scary topic. But I have been putting some thought to what would happen to my horses if something was to happen to me?? I have a non horse husband who could care less wouldn't have a clue to even know where to buy my feed from, let alone how much to feed. My step kids would care less. Has anybody set up some sort off account to help with expenses and left a specific person (whom they trust) resposible?? Thank for any input!! Have a Blessed Day !!! |

Location: Kansas | If you have a special friend or family who you're 100% sure would take good care of them, establish an agreement where if something happens to you the horses belong to them. Hopefully if they're good people they won't necessarily need money unless you have a "lot" of horses. My husband and I put that in a will at one point, then the folks who we left our animals to got a divorce. That changed everything. |

Location: OKLAHOMA | This was kinda my thoughts. I have what I call my extra kids that are horse peeps and i would trust. Right now I only have 3 but they are older and I just want to be sure they are taken care of until it is time for them to go. Thank you .... |

Location: Missouri | My husband would....he's not really a horse person, but he knows the right people to ask, knows what to feed them, when to call a vet, etc. He'd likely keep them for our kids and would be willing to ask questions and learn enough so they (the kids) could keep them. |

Location: Slipping down the slope of old age. Boo hoo. | We set up a trust years ago. The trust directs the executor to contact a dear horse-person friend (and there is also a back-up horse person) who will take ownership/control of all horses and horse-related items immediately with instructions to transfer ownership ASAP to this person as well as a monetary amount for their care. These two people agreed to take responsibility and the executor has their contact information (which I keep updated as necessary). Edited to add: our executor of trust/will is not a family member, but the trust department VP of our long-time local bank who has a very reputable trust department. Our trust attorney also has the memorandum regarding our horse care instructions -- and our non-horse sons are aware of this direction within our trust and totally support it. We were very careful to set up everything legally so there would be no issues passing the horses' ownership ASAP to the horse-care person.

Location: OKLAHOMA | Well believe me it stinks. Sure hasn't turned out like I had hoped it would. All I can say is if you have a significant other that has an interest in what you are passionate about you are BLESSED!!! I have zero help unless i throw a fit then its like they are put out with the world. So over the years i have made almost everything GIRL friendly. I can fix most of my stuff by myself. Huge fan of electric tape fence and solar chargers, put lots of thought into setting up stuff to be accessible with trucks and tractors. You learn to set thing ups so you don't have to carry feed or hay far. Sorry for the overload. |

| I keep a written document that I update as life changes. Yes, my hubb would take care of the feeding and stuff, but he has a tendency to overfeed so they'd end up obese in no time! But the hubb has no clue as to values, who might be a better home for each horse, or the ones who would sell fast on the open market. |

Location: Jersey Girl | I have been thinking about this too. I have often thought I need to put something in writing. My husband is very much and animal lover but I don't know that he would want the burden long term of caring for my horses. I do self care so they are off property.
I would probably stipulate that my retired gelding go to my good friend and if for some reason she was not in the position to take another horse and my husband was not able to care for him (financially or otherwise)I would want him put down. As for my mare, I would also ask (in writing) that a good horse friend help find her a good home. If none could help and it too much for my husband to do the care I would probably have her put down too. |

Location: OKLAHOMA | Thanks for sharing with me. I am planning on having the talk with my extra's and see if they think they will be on board with my thinking. I would never want to burden them with my horses when they have plenty of them. But I will be very picky about who i chat with about this. I have also considered having it set up to have my old mare who is 29 this year put down if somebody will not want to take her on. My other 2 could go on to help others ... |

He looks wonderful for 26. I never thought when I took him off the track as a six-year-old and refused to sell him that he would live this long.

Location: OKLAHOMA | Oh believe me I hope I am out of the horse business before something happens to me. But this world is so crazy that could be any time. So I would rather my ponies have a good place to land than to think any of my bunch would take care of them. My horses are an inconvenience to my so called family. I have way to much tied up in them to think they would get traded/sold or given to somebody not of my choice. Mine are 29, 21 and 17 so hopefully I will be around for whatever happens to them. But, I want to think ahead...

She also has a beautiful bay dressage horse named Tango. She told me last Wednesday that she needed to get him back to his previous person. His previous person said she would like him back if he ever needs a home.Contacted her today, she doesn't want him back :((( My friend thought she knew for sure where he would be going. Now he is up for sale, and who knows where he will end up.:*((( |

Location: Arkansas | I was talking to Sean about a will yesterday, and I definitely need to make sure this subject is included. I've told Chandler to make sure they are taken care of, but my wish is that my phenomenal horse friend would take them. I just need to set the money situation up; I have 5, so I understand there has to be money there. Mine are 24, 19, 15 (two), and 12. Bless everyone for caring enough to plan ahead for their 4 legged kids. |

Oh Miss Mary, this just hurts my heart for you. On top of her death, I know now you'll worry about Tango |
