I have a mare that has major anxiety tied to the trailer at the show when by herself.  She paws, rears/bucks/kicks and works herself into a sweat.  I have tried MANY calming supplements (Uckele/Herb/Perfect Prep) and I am about at my wits end....................Anxiety in her stall if she sees others out before her (bucks/kicks/rears/paws) ........any suggestions?  I have tied her by herself to a tree, everything...........

What are you feeding her as in feed and hay? Does she stay stalled up or is on pasture?

She is out as much as possible (weather depending)...........orchard grass/timothy round bale, alfalfa when stalled.  Kalm Ultra.

Sounds like she needs B-1 and Magnesium ........I have good luck with Thai-Cal from Finish Line or Quiessense from Foxden Equine.  This type of horse can sure try your patience. You might even try injectable B-1 to get her started on it.

Try a really good magnesium supplement  (such as magrestore) and Succeed paste.  Working miracles on mare that is a lot like yours.  Calming supplements did nothing for her and she was treated for ulcers as well.

I had a really anxious/nervous mare a couple of years ago. The only thing that I found really worked, were the THE Calming Cookies. I would give her one just before loading her in the trailer, and another when I saddled her at the race. Those were the only thing that would knock her out enough to keep her cool, but still not taking anything away from her performance. Hope this helps!

I've had good luck with Mare-aculous from Animal Element, omeprazole when traveling, which muted some of the anxious behavior but honestly, the best thing for her was making sure she had a friend at all times. I have been known to haul one of my retired horses around with me just to babysit her at the trailer. She's a nice enough horse to make it worth my while.

Calming supplements I swear make mine worse. It's like they slow her body down and that freaks her brain out. I haven't found anything that works. So I just started hauling her with me and parking far away and letting her freak out. She still gets nervous, but after about 8 months of that her fits have pretty much disappeared.

My Dexter wasn't as bad as your mare, but dang he would dig a hole to China when he was left alone at the trailer. He didn't rear or get all sweaty, but would just paw paw paw. I purposefully tied him in the same spot on my trailer every time, because he also dented the hell out of my trailer (because he pawed big and pawed high).

It took 4 months of being tied to the trailer just about every single day for 1-2 hours for him to start to not paw as much. The first day I came back from riding my other horse and didn't see a giant hole, well, I was shocked.

So maybe ....... she just needs more time?

Or maybe start hauling a companion goat with her.....

THIS!  This is how you teach one to stand tied -- by doing it consistently at home.  It will not be pretty during the beginning, but they will learn to stand there.  Good manners start at home.

Let them stand with a pal then move the pal further away. Then no pal at all but you out riding around so she can see action. If your horse doesn't respond to magnesium and thiamine supplements you can go with 100-120mg of prozac daily. It takes 3 weeks to get up to par but you can see a difference in one week on some horses. If its a true serotonin issue this can make a night and day difference for the horse. It will change the horses life, just as it can in people.

I have a gelding that does exactly the same .  He is a dream to ride but man, he will wear you out on the ground.  Tied up to the trailer is a nightmare, to the point that we DREAD taking him ANYWHERE!!!  Any suggestions for a gelding?

Old timers trick is to place a metal horse shoe below the fetlock (open area of the shoe should be towards to front of the hoof). Try this at home while your horse is tied in a safe place.  They don't like the feel of the shoe clanking as they paw/kick and will soon stop.   It may take a few sessions, but it works.

I have a 3 year old mare that is going through the 3 year old tantrum stage as well.  She goes everywhere with the other 2 and as soon as I get to the race she gets tied by herself next to the safest sturdiest place I can find.  Last Thursday was her 5th time to be hauled away from home and let me tell you she was putting on quite a show for everyone.  She reared and pawed and doublekicked over her head, pinned her ears and showed her teeth to any horse that went buy.  She has a new nickname "Piranha"  But that 4 hours was so good for her.  They eventually get over it if you dont give in.  Her mother was the same way and she got over it.  just be careful and safe and let her deal with it.  Saddle and tie at home(they usually are fine at home) a lot and consistently.  I took her yesterday and when I took her buddy away she was better, not great but better.  This Thursday same deal.  Good luck with yours!

If the pawing gets bad hobble her, that will take a lot of that crap out.  IT WORKS!

With my anxious guy magnesium (nupafeed) and CBD, clicker training and Warwick Schiller’s methods helped. Took time, but that’s ok, he’s a much happier horse now.

So what does the clicker training do?
