Today is
I have a yearling filly who ripped her nostril on a bucket strap in December. We had it sewn up and it healed great, however now she is extremely touchy around her muzzle. If you try to touch her there she throws her head and avoids your touch as best she can. What can I do to help her through this?
I would not force the issue. I would use food bribes just to get her to like hands near her face again and see if she'll let you pet her somewhere on her face after taking a treat or bite of feed from your hand. Go slow and be patient. I bet after a week of bribes and soft approach she'll be better. And from there a continued soft approach to her face and head should get her back to normal.
I had a horse whose nose abscessed after a vet used a twitch on it. It took years before he got over it. He still hates vet clinics tho. Admittedly, I did not focus on it, just lightly touched it once in a while. He was fine to bridle. One day a friend who did not know of his problem, walked up to him and started petting his nose while he was tied up. I was astonished that he let her do it. Not much for advice, just sharing my experience.
I agree with other poster. Just go slow, don't force it. Maybe start with her forehead and then just pet her face and go all the way down to her nose. Eventually by showing her that you aren't going to do anything bad to her nose when you get there, she'll most likely get better. It may just be that you'll never be able to go directly for her nose.
I bet its still sensitive, the nerves in horses noses are so sensitive and still could be in the healing stage. I would not keep picking, just leave her be about her nose and let her forget about it being hurt at one time. Just rub her on her forhead and work your way down a little at a time, dont rush it. If you keep on shes going to get head shy and then you really will have a problem..So be patient with her she will get better over time..
Thank you all! I’ll do that.
