My horse has one clubbyish/upright foot and is less muscled on his right side. He has improved over the years tho!

My saddle forever falls to the right a bit. Drives me nuts! I end up riding around bareback a lot! I’m riding in a shimmable wool/felt pad at the moment. Saddle fit and shim combo was approved by chiropractor. I ride around and constantly haul the saddle back to the middle.

Should I try an antislip pad? more shims? I’m just at a loss at this point. I don’t think it’s me? Can’t say I’ve had this problem on other horses and you could think I would fall off sideways bareback if it was a balance issue?

Thank you for any help!

My horse has the same problem and I found a Wade pad works well. I have also used a Protector pad and it works well although too expensive.

What brand of saddle are you using what tree/bars do you have in it and thickness of saddle pad? The angle of the bars have alot to do with saddle fit and a too thick of pad will cause alot of slipping of the saddle. Do you have any pictures of horse with and with out saddle? And if cinch is not the right length it can casue issues too. Just throwing this all out there since we dont have much to go on here. The shims are more of a too wide saddle issue, is that why you are using shims?

Oh no this is great!

My saddle is a Molly Powell extreme barrel. It’s a “wide tree” which they say is 6.75inch if I remember correctly? My saddle pad is a 1inch diamond wool pad with 6 shim pockets. Three on each side. The shims are wool as well about 1/2 inch. I guess I’ve been using the shims to “fill in” the missing/lacking muscle on the right side (the right side is the clubby-ish foot). I started shimming the whole right side and have been able to decrease to one on the right shoulder only. Cinch is felt/wool with nylon too 32inch.

I see that too on the lower muscle side, but it looks ok on the larger side?

hes going to be frustrating to fit, which you already know.

i feel like 1” plus shims for a typical barrel tree is too much.  I don’t feel the trees are designed for that much padding underneath.  I really love when I can use a 1/2”-3/4”.  I’m ok with a 7/8” if it’s a horse i think will fill out more.  Anything overthat I think we can do better with saddle fit.

I have noticed significantly less “roll” or shifting when I mount using my saddleright pad vs a 5 star pad though with my one horse.  I wouldn’t call him mutton withered, but he is pretty broad.  Saddle doesn’t roll with either pad while I’m riding, just when I step up to get on.

I would change out the saddle pad and go with a 5 Star 7/8 and a roper style cinch to give your saddle more stability, but I see what you are talking about with the muscle problems..So this will be a hard fit with any saddle, unless you have a saddle custom made for this horse, but that can get a bit pricey for you..

Have you tryed other saddles on him to see if they will roll a little? Many years ago I had a saddle that would roll and I was always adjusting it it drove me nuts, I had a saddle maker look at it, will the tree was crooket, I always thought it was me are my horse nope it was the saddle, lol.. But I do see what you are talking about with these pictures..

agreed... looks like the bar angle is wrong and to wide

What do you think of the cinch length?
