| OTTB 9 year old I have had this horse for 3 years now. Been working on basics for first 2 years. Currently still working on basics and have her on pattern. During the pattern, she will pick up her left lead/switch it before the turn. When working in the arena, trying to get her into a left lead is just fighting the whole time. Tried working in smaller circle then picking up the left lead that way but she either will go into her right lead or cross canter. I'm just making her frustrated and also me. Any suggestions? |

She is completely sound. She has been checked by the vet and chiropractor. No stiffiness or soundness issues. |

| When I was in High School I had a real nice OTTB that wouldn't pick up his left lead no matter what we did. He could lope the smallest of circles on the wrong lead. He had a bone chip in his left knee. Vets didn't think it mattered and didn't think it need to come out. Eventually we took it out and he picked up the lead without issues after that. |

| Will she pick up her left lead if you free lunge in a roundpen? If not, then I agree that it could be a soundness issue. If she will, then she is probably not understanding the way that you are asking her to change leads. Do you have someone that could come watch you ride and give you some pointers? |

She will pick it up in the field and round pen. I am not asking her to do lead changes. Ill try to do a left circle and pick it up that way but she will pick up the right lead instead. |

If it is not a soundness issue and if she will pick up a left lead on her own in the pasture, then the only "thing" left is YOU. And I don't mean that in a bad way, but as you already know, she doesn't understand what you are asking and it's leaving the both of you frustrated. I would suggest to go take some lessons with a trainer. Have the trainer watch you and see what she is doing. Then have the trainer get on and try themselves. There is something to be said of watching what the horse is doing and then feeling what the horse is doing. If it's not a soundness issue, then you are just simply not asking her correctly and/or not setting her body up correctly to get it. Can you be very specfic about what you are doing with your legs/seat/hands when you ask for the right lead, and ask for the left? |
