I fed my horse a new grain and within minutes his chewing slowed down and he eventually stopped eating it.  Unlike him.  Mind you this was almost a week ago.  Since then, his belly has been tucked up, he's visibly thinner and he is coughing throughout the day.  What happened and how serious is this?  He is not rolling, laying down, or acting strange in any other way.  Anyone ever dealt with this? 

What grain did you feed him? Depending on which one it is could be the issue...

I normally feed Purina, but the feedstore was out of that so they suggested "something similar" and I bought Tribute and can't remember which specific kind because I tossed the bag out.  I do not know about that brand.  Insights? 

Tribute produces their feed in an ionophore free mill, and is a very good company. You only fed it one time and then tossed it out? How's the horse now? Also abruptly switching a feed can cause some belly upsets in some horses. 

Also are you sure it was Tribute and not Triumph?

Yes, Tribute Kalm Ultra.  This is an older horse that's never coliced or had a belly ache in his life basically.  He's my easy keeper.  

I started my old man on this feed too, and I finally found a feed that he will eat, I'm so hoping that this feed will build him back up. This feed you dont feed very much at one time or you could have problems, How much did you feed your gelding the first couple of feedings? 

It sounds like he might be choking. The problem with choke is, the esophagus will swell around the blockage and make it even harder to clear.  I think I'd be taking him to the vet. 

Since this episode happened a week ago did you put him back on the purina feed?

Let's not forget the horses that were lost because of tribute,while they said they were a safe mill,they settled some lawsuits of many horses dieing.

Really?! I did not know that! I cant even get that feed around here but from all I've read online I was given the impression they were a good feed company 

Yes,it was a couple years ago,the rep kept coming on here but wouldn't give info,just kept saying feed was safe.I used to feed it,we had multiple colic symptoms until I changed it.

I agree with the choking suggestion. I had one choke on Ultium because it was a stickier feed. He started acting like he was colicing within minutes of eating, days preceding he didn’t even want to try his grain. He had gotten some grain stuck in his esophageal pouch and it caused an infection. Had to take him to a vet to get scoped to find all this out. Now he eats with a big rock in his feeder and I switched to a more digestible grain.

LOL, theres a really long thread about this, I can bump it up if you guys would like!!! It was back in 2016, so really not that long ago..

Oh! Nah.. it's ok. Shoot I can barely remember what happened last week lol! I dont feed that and wont ever now but it is one of the feeds that's available on chewy! 

LOL, On Chewy they have it at 28.99 for the Kalm Ultra and every where else its 17.00 or less..
