training advise please....

long story short i have a a very talented mare that just turned 7 this year she is fancy broke done all the slow work she is running a very nice pattern at home and away at friends houses.

When I take her to a race to enter her she acts very anxious (i have given her meds and such to help) she will take her first barrel great and on the back side of he second she blows out and heads to the alley. Like im gonna get the he** out of here!

I have had her to the vet, nothing major from the vet we injected hocks and back .

I feel like it is a confidance issue maybe. But, how do I get her over this whithout looking like an idiot for trying so many times on her?!

Thanks for any help or thoughts!

Since this problems seems to be at the show most likely it is going to have to be corrected there.......

I would probably use a couple of exhibitons to slow her back down trot or slow lope whichever gives you good control and correct her.......and turn the 1st a couple of times...at least till you feel her give to you.....before you head to the second barrel etrc.....I would stay slow till you feel she is not resisting you.

And don't worry what others think....

Agree, slow her down and make her do it correctly AT the show. Exhibitions are great for this, but I'm the type that I get it in my head that "it's just an exhibition" and ride differently. Heck, even maybe find a smaller one to enter youth or adult (not sure how old you are) for a cheap entry fee. Act like it's the real deal, saddle, warm her up like you normally would before a run and then go in there and LOPE to and TROT around each barrel correctly then add speed from there. Good luck and let us know how she's doing. Glad you seem to have ruled out pain issues by getting her vetted. Only other thing I would say is the sooner you correct this issue the better off you will be, better to go slow and low while she's 7 than have one blown up at 10 because you ignored the problem and just try to yank her around the barrel and causing other behavior issues down the road. Kudos to you for asking for help!

Sometimes when a horse feels to tight at a certain spot they will do that.  Is it possible that you are giving a different pocket or that your approach is slightly different causing her to be tighter  at that point.  If they feel to tight they get the flight mentality and go to the gate or up the fence.  Just another thought to consider.

Start with ear plugs.

if shes anxious she will be rushing the turn. Lots of times when they blow off its because they closed up on the backside. Make sure you can handle her enough to give plenty of room in the back so she doesnt feel even more rushed and anxious. Maybe slow down on that turn some and let her get her confidence back.

There are great posts already with good advice.  However have you thought about your nerves as well?  Possibly transferring them to your mare?  I know we get in our own heads when going to a jackpot then adding in the pressure knowing you have a good prospect, expecting/wanting them to perform well.  Has happened to me several times.

My experience: My mare was ducking the 2nd barrel and if you got her past the 2nd she would duck the 3rd barrel.  At home she ran awesome  this went on for 2 years.  took her to different vets and no one thought to check her ovaries.  Long story how I figured overies.  but when they ultrasound the ovaries she had one the size of a grapefruit!  Asked how long it takes to get that big said bout 2 years!  uggg.  anyways had emergency surgery and hasnt ducked since but lost her run.  I think it was bc I was told to layoff and run and inject and run to see.  by the way  I changed everything I could think of thinking it was me and my hands and so forth!  If your horse just started this keep digging!  she is trying to tell you something.  Just bc they work awesome at home doesnt mean anything!!!  The horse I have now he was ducking the 2nd barrel and at home he worked like he was supposed to!  Found out he had ankle chip in a very bad spot and we did surgery and I am slowly bringing him back.  Ive had 2 runs in a row and he hasnt thought bout ducking! but i am going slow tho but even at this speed you could feel his body tense up before surgery.  Big difference!  Good luck and I know very frustrating!

Sounds like you and I are thinking along the same lines just different way of saying it.

Thank you all for good advice ! I am going to just exhibetion her for a while and slow things back down. She has been one of the most fun athletic horses i have been on also the most head scratching ten steps forward then at least six back kind of horse  :

It s hard for me to give her the same feelig would in a run when we are parcticing because i do get a little more anxious to do well. I will work in that too good advise I also like the earplugs idea!

I will try and post a couple videos!
