What are everyone’s thoughts? I have had success running on both. However, I am looking at a couple weanlings. I like the gelding’s body better, however I like the mare, well because she is a mare and if she gets hurt I can at least breed her.

Mare...easier n quicker to train, will generally, not always, try harder n have more heart, and of course, if they get injured...there you have my opinion.

I don’t care, a good horse is a good horse to me. I just want the horse that feels like home when I am with him/her. I don’t breed or sell, I buy for life.

i will say no stallions for me. I have no experience with them.

I'm indfrent to what one I think is the best ride, I get along great with mares none of mine are ever salty and issues with heat but I treat them like studs with repo stuff, dont do it end of story lol.

I'm currently only buying mares as I want to run then add to my breeding program, but they are not just any mare, they have to be exceptionally built with great breeding. I dont buy into the you can just breed her if she gets hurt. Not every mare needs to reproduce regardless if they ended up unsound for what ever reason....

That said, I proaibly enjoy good studs the most the bond is just diffrent, but ain't nobody got time for all the extra with that lol.

I will never own a mare. Just don't like them, not for me. I love my geldings.

I have no preference - I love the mare and gelding I currently run, and have ridden plenty of mares and geldings I hate. Just depends on the individual!

I'm partial to mares, I admit. I've only had a handful but when you had their heart, you had their heart. I've had one for 13 years now and she's just the sweetest thing. That said, I know that there are total bit** mares out there too. I wouldn't have one like that if you gave her to me, I don't care how nice she is in the arena.

I had one gelding that was a lazy pos years ago and he kind of ruined me on geldings for a while. That said, as I'm considering getting serious about finding another horse, I will consider the right gelding too if he has a good attitude and is willing to please.

I currently am training a 4 year old gelding and a 3 year old mare.  They are 8 months apart.  The mare has passed up the gelding by leaps and bounds.  Just saying.

I love the try you get out of a mare, but I refuse to put up with one that is a total brat when she's in heat. I had one back in the day I used to joke around and say she's not "marey" at all, she's just a brat all the time... which she was.

I love my geldings, sure they can be lazy at times, but as long as they fire when it's time to go then I'm ok with that. I'd rather have one that I have to hustle a little bit anyway, but that's just my style. Mare, gelding, stallion, really doesn't matter to me as long as they work, I have had good and bad of all kinds.

Off topic, but I'm the same way with paints. I know people that LOVE them and I know people that wouldn't care if they won the NFR would NEVER buy a paint. As long as they run and do what they are asked, I could care less what they look like.

I've had 4 geldings and 1 mare now, I prefer geldings. My last gelding cut tendons in 3 places & came back sound & approved to try to run, but I didn't want to risk it. He was too nice to have him hurt again so I gave him to someone who wanted a trail horse. After going through that and losing a good chunk of $, I replaced him with a mare. She has her pros and cons. I like geldings because they do what you tell them, or at least mine do. If I ask them to jump down a cliff snowy river style they'll do so without hesitation. The mare would stop dead & chuck me off down the mountain. She does what she wants, when she wants to do it and when you try to make her she throws quite the tantrum. But she's the friendliest, the boys prefer to be left alone. But now if something happens to her she's still useful as a broodmare for me & hopefully will spit out some nice colts

Lol, yes on the geldings! My guy gives 110% every time I ride. He's been SO easy to train, he's always happy, always loves to see me, loves to work. Picks up on things super fast.. I got lucky! Most of my friends all have mares, and it's a constant battle with the ones they have. Everything is a fight. Obviously not all are like that, but the ones that I'm around you couldn't give to me.
