| Was just thinking the other day that I need to make some bread! Years ago when I lived in Africa, doctors felt like store bought bread was making me sick, one of the guys gave me his HUGHES TOOL COMPANY magazine. It had a story about the Pitchfork Ranch cook who made sourdough bread. I used that recipe out of necessity. It is still the bread recipe that I use. Basically it saved my life. (had salmonella food poisoning). Wish I could thank that guy for giving me that little magazine. Google sour dough bread recipes |

I'm going to show my stupidity here, what exactly is a starter?
A starter is basically soured milk and other ingredients that will produce a yeast that makes the bread rise. When I was a teenager my mother got a starter from the neighbor which was like a piece of dough. That was pretty common to get a starter. No telling how old that thing was, probably years. My starter has always been more liquid and yes it was pretty yucky. My had flour, sugar and potatoes in it. This is the starter that the chuck wagon cook used on the Pitchfork Ranch. That is where you get sour dough bread. Pretty darn good. |

So does it take just a pinch of the starter or does it ever run out? Only bread I've made is in the bread machine. |

It has been awhile since I have made bread but as I recall you use about a cup of starter. You do have to "feed" it once in awhile. You take out a cup and add new ingredients. You can use what you take out or throw it away. Feeding it keeps it yucky! You have to refrigerate it and it cannot be kept in an airtight container. It is kind of a lot of trouble but the bread is really good. |

Location: Not Where I Want to Be | Sourdough starter is the easiest thing in the world. Takes a bit of effort to get going but once started it's easy as pie. Flour and water, that's it. Nothing else, for sure no milk, no potatoes, no sugar etc. |

HINT!!!
Let me find the page out of the magazine and I will post it. It was given to me in 1972. I have several recipe boxes so will have to locate it. My favorite recipe is for Mueslix bread. Uses Mueslix cereal. I like bread with "stuff" in it |

Just my opinion but I think the bread maker is the way to go. |

That works exceptionally well for paste and papier mache |
