Have you had better luck feeding a hard keeper regular alfalfa cubes, or alfalfa+timothy?  Have you had better luck with one brand of cubes over another??

I feed my hard keeper Standlee pellets and she does great on them. That said, I've used a few other brands as well. I went with Standlee only to get the pellet form .

I started my horses on Alfa-Pro.  It's an alfalfa cube that looks more like cow cake, but it also has probiotics.  My horses love it and look great!
