I really want my foals to be huge and plum like I see in the big western pastures. What is everyone’s favorite mare and foal feed? Or the best feeding regimen to help them grow to their max? Thank you in advance!

What helps western foals look so good is good grass. They will look like they are out of grass & still have that beautiful bloom to them. The grass out there is so much better for livestock. Fescue grass is one the worst things that ever happened to livestock. It puts out lots of tonage but it pitful for livestock.

Over the years we have tried many many different brands of feed & have had different companies do feed trials here, but we always go back to Purina 300. For about 30 days before our mares foal we add Calf Manna to their feed.

I feed Safe Choice Mare and Foal. But I think the best thing you can feed a foal is alfalfa. 

Also, they're only going to get as big as their genetics will allow. 

Triple Crown Growth - I was so pleased with this feed when my mare was in foal. She honestly looked better than she had on any other feed. This was her a day before she foaled and her filly at 4 months old. 

Blue Bonnet Intensify Growth. 

I feed my horses Triple Crown Senior but I do not like thier growth. It is high starch/sugar. The BB Intensify Growth is awesome. When My broodmares get to the month they are due I will start adding the BB Growth to thier TC senior to eventually do 1/2-1/2 mix so when i wean babies I can put them on BB Growth 

Crossspur-   Do you have any idea what variety of grass is out there? My horseshoer went out to colorado to elk hunt and was blown away by the quality of forage. He said the pack horses - that work their hiney off- were fed no grain/hay. Just staked out to graze a little. He said they were really healthy and had great weight. That has to be some super high nutrition grass.

Does anybody feed alfalfa and Renew Gold to foals or 2 year olds?

forage can vary so much just 20 miles from another place. An hour  north of me they have to feed zero selenium because they have so much already and it is poor grass country. Just dry and lots of greasewood and sage brush. Where I am, it is a very very short grass. We can feed selenium that is already in mineral and grains but do not add extra. The locals call the grass, black root, and it is awesome for making the livestock look like a million bucks, but it is never taller than maybe 4 inches. We also have other grasses etc but this is the stuff that they run too when it starts to pop up in the spring. South of me an hour is sandy soil and much better grazing but they don't have the black root in the abundance we do, they can run more livestock per acre though. So there is that lol

All the horses at Sherry Cervi’s, including yearlings and two year olds get alfalfa and alfalfa mixed hay and Renew Gold only. 

A lot of it is different varities of gamagrass. They also have bluestem. When we were out at Jim Hunt's in SD he told us they have Buffalo grass there. They feed very little hay ( only when the snow is really deep). He said in the winter after the freeze the protein comes way up in it. My husband helps at the Babbitt Ranch in NE AZ sometimes.
