Location: Shawnee OK | I am looking at buying new blankets now that they will be going on sale. What brands to look for/stay away from and what weights are the best? I am in Central Oklahoma so it doesn't get super cold but sometimes below freezing. TIA for your input |

Location: Illinois | I only buy the SmartPak Ultimate turouts now. I have blanket shredders & they're the only ones that have survived for over one season, some are going on 5 years old now. And you can't beat free replacement for 10 years or your money back. I actually ended up with 2 that don't fit horses I have now so they let me send back & refunded my purchase as store credit to use on something else. If a snap breaks they send new ones for free. Really can't beat the value, I buy them when they're on sale. They have a new one thats cool thats like a 3 in 1, you can change out the liners to whatever heaviness you need |

| I have Schnieders, smartpak, weatherbeeta, Big D and everything in between. My Smartpak deluxe was my favorite and loved the 100g fill option but I bought a new one and it didnt fit my guy at all. I honestly have had the most luck with the cheapies from chick saddlery, Horze is the brand. 1200d, midweight and sheets. They hold up well under rain, sleet and havent had a snag in any of the 3 I own and its been 3 years. |

| I wouild order a turnout sheet, a turnout blanket medium weight (220), and a stable sheet and possbily a hood if it's very cold or have a thin skinned horse. Then you can layer as needed and remove as needed. I just ordered all 3 of these plus a lite detachable hood for my horse. I ordered the Rockin Sp Deluxe waterproof neck rug, the Rockin SP waterproof deluxe turnout blanket medium (220), Rockin SP Deluxe waterproof turnout sheet lite (0 g) and the smartpak deluxe stable blanket medium. I live in the cold north where the average temp can range from below 0 to mid 20's. The blanket sale Smartpak is having right now saved about $88. I came to about $300 plus free and quick shipping. |

| I buy the cheapo stable blankets off chicks or Big d's for stabling or trailering and then I'll spend a little more on a turnout blanket but most of the time I dont turnout with a blanket anyway. I have 1 turnout blanket and about 4 stable blankets I just bought a lighter fleece blanket for those nights that are still cooler than I'd like ... especially now that's hes trying to shed out already! Chicks had them for $29.99 .. nice little blanket for the barn. |

Location: NW MT | I prefer Schneiders' blankets too. Mine have always held up great - especially with the PSSM2 mare in one all the time now due to extreme sensitivity to cold. For a general blanket, I like their midweight. She also has their heavyweight & waterproof sheets. I have a couple off brand lightweight ones that I use when it's not as cold but too cool for her. |

I stopped blanketing years back. Ours are in the pasture all day and have a run in stall they can get in whenever they want. All of them have plenty of hay to keep warm. Yes they do get a bit fuzzy, but that just means a longer cool down for us. And if they really get sweaty I have a couple of fleece coolers that I put on them till they are dry. |

I probably wouldn't blanket if they were pastured 24/7 ... just too much can happen. A friend of mine has about 40plus acres and keeps their horses turned out with the option to come up to the barn if they want. They call the horses up every evening to feed... her older gelding didnt show up with the others so they went looking for him, he was down, leg was stuck in his blanket somehow and couldn't get up to come in. He ended up being just fine but after that she quit turning them out with blankets. If it gets that cold she just keeps them in the barn with blankets on. I do the same. |

| I prefer not to blanket as well if I can. If the horse grows a good winter coat and has access to shelter then they are equipped well to handle the weather. I do blanket our 24 year old because he shivers if it gets cold. And I'm blanketing my new mare that doesn't have much of a winter coat since she's coming from warmer climate. |

Location: Georgia | I'm in GA and I will blanket mine if it gets below freezing. My favorite blanket that I've had came from Jeffers - the Jeffers brand. I have been pretty dang impressed with it. Great price too! |

Location: Shawnee OK | Thank you everyone for your input. I did not blanket this year. In the past I have but my daughter was running all year and didn't want a fuzzy horse LOL. The pasture they are in is only 10 acres and I have my eyes on them several times a day. They do have plenty of hay and a place to get out of the wind if they want. Thank you again for all the input. |

| I buy cheaper blankets but I like the Horze brand. Usually get them from chicks. The $50 one I bought lasted me 2 years, only reason why it ripped was because it got caught on something in his stall, I believe wood was sticking out. It's all fixed up now though so hopefully my new one will last longer than 2 years! |

This is my newest Horze brand fleece cooler. I got it for $23.99 I absolutely love it for those nights that's it's still chilly but not freezing or trailer rides. I used it today after I had to hose him after our workout. It fit him perfectly! I thought it woukd seem cheaply made for the price but I'm really impressed! It's very nice. |

| Most companies will start with the sales now to clear out winter blankets. I just saw that Coolhorse.com is having 35% off blankets too. |

That's is awesome, last new blanked I bought ripped in half right down the center in under 12 hours. I put it on in the evening next am it was on the ground. I was told they would do nothing it was my pen or horse not the blanket. I canceled the 5 others I had ordered. Customer service is so hard to find anymore. I'm diffently going to look into the ones you recomended. |
